I absolutely love this pattern. I want to make it but cannot get the suggested yarn. I have 3 skeins of hand spun bulky Hand spun Irish wool, approximately 405 yards total. It is irregular from fine to bulky changing from cream to brown or dark brown. I'm an intermediate knitter taking lessons to expan my skills. Thank you! I'm so glad I found your site.

From the picture it appears that this top has buttons to fasten, but I can't see in the pattern the instructions for including button holes or for adding the buttons in the assembly. Please can you advise?

Dear Laura, you are correct, pattern will be updated asap. There are no buttonholes, since piece is worked loosely enough, you can button through sts - you need 4 buttons, sew them as follows (measure from bottom edge): Size S: 2-11-20-29 cm - Size M: 3-12-21-30 cm - Size L: 3-12-22-31 cm - Size XL: 3-12-22-32 cm - Size XXL: 3-13-23-33 cm. Happy knitting!

I wish to knit this pattern. Since the Highlander range is no longer available, which would be the best option to get the same/similar appearance in the finished garment? Many thanks for your wonderful website and warm regards from Australia.

Heleen Jacobs

Knitting tension: width of 6 sts in stocking sts with 1 thread of each quality = 10 cm. Garter sts (back and forth on needle): knit all rows Knitting info: The top is knitted in stocking sts and assembled inside out (reverse stocking sts). Increasing tips: Inc inside 3 sts in garter sts by making a yo. Knit into back of yo on the returning row to avoid making a hole. Knit inc sts in stocking sts. BUTTONHOLES: Buttons sewn on the left front. Because the garment is knitted loosely there is no reason to make any dec for buttonholes. Sew buttons in the bottom of the edge by the following measures: SIZE S: 2, 11, 20 and 29 cm SIZE M: 3, 12, 21 and 30 cm SIZE L: 3, 12, 21 and 31 cm SIZE XL: 3, 12, 22 and 32 cm SIZE XXL: 3, 13, 23 and 33 cm Back piece: Cast on 23-25-28-31-35 sts on needles size 12 mm with 1 thread of each yarn quality (= double thread). Purl 1 row from the WS and continue in stocking sts. When piece measures 6 cm dec 1 st each side = 21-23-26-29-33 sts. When piece measures 11 cm inc 1 st each side on every 7 cm a total of 3 times = 27-29-32-35-39 sts. When piece measures 40-41-42-43-44 cm knit 3 sts each side in garter sts until finished measurements (knit remaining sts as before). When piece measures 50-51-53-53-54 cm inc 1 st for wide shoulder inside the 3 sts in garter sts each side - see Increasing tips = 29-31-34-37-41 sts. When piece measures 58-60-62-64-66 cm cast off the middle 5-7-8-9-9 sts for neck and dec 1 st to shape the neckline on next row = 11-11-12-13-15 sts left on each shoulder Cast off when piece measures 60-62-64-66-68 cm. Right front: Cast on 13-14-15-17-19 sts on needles size 12 mm with 1 thread of each yarn quality (= double thread). Purl 1 row from the WS and continue in stocking sts with 3 sts towards mid front in garter sts. When piece measures 6 cm dec 1 st at side = 12-13-14-16-18 sts. When piece measures 11 cm inc 1 st at side as described for back piece = 15-16-17-19-21 sts. Read all of the following section before continuing! When piece measures 30-31-32-33-34 cm inc 1 st inside the 3 sts in garter sts towards mid front on every 2 cm a total of 7-7-7-8-8 times – see Increasing tips = 22-23-24-27-29 sts. At the same time when piece measures 40-41-42-43-44 cm knit 3 sts at the side in garter sts until finished measurements. At the same time inc 1 st at side as done for back piece when piece measures 50-51-52-53-54 cm = 23-24-25-28-30 sts. When piece measures 60-62-64-66-68 cm cast of the outermost 11-11-12-13-15 sts for shoulder = 12-13-13-15-15 sts left. Knit 6-7-7-9-9 cm over these sts for collar and put sts on a thread. Left front: Cast on and knit as right front, but mirrored. Assembly: Assemble the top with the wrong side out. Use 1 thread of Highlander and sew shoulder seams. Sew side seams in the outer loops of sts. Sew collar tog mid back from threads using mattress sts and sew to back piece with the seam on the wrong side of garment (when worn). |
