Could you give supply directions for this sweater that would explain what yarn to use that I could purchase at Walmart or Michaels. What American ply and weight? I like the pattern but want to make it in acrylic yarn that I can wash.

Gauge: 21 sts x 28 rows on larger needles in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Pattern: See chart. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st. The charts are placed sideways on the page with the bottom of the charts closest the inside edge of the page. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Body: The cardigan is knit in the round after the bottom edge with a steek for center front. Cast on 216-240-264 sts on smaller circular needles with brown. Knit Pattern 1, then repeat Pattern 2 until band measures 7 cm. Change to larger circular needles, cast on 3 sts at beginning of row and inc 3 sts evenly distributed on the row; join. Knit Pattern 3 in stockinette st (but the 3 new sts + 2 edge sts at center front = 5 steek sts which are not knit in the pattern) = 222-246-270 sts. Knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 54-60-66 sts for the front, place a marker, 109-121-133 sts for the back, place a marker, 54-60-66 sts for the front. After Pattern 3 knit with brown until the piece measures 32-33-34 cm, then knit Pattern 4, then Pattern 3, then stockinette st with brown to finished dimensions. At the same time when the piece measures 48-49-50 cm [18-7/8" - 19.25" - 19.75"] bind off the 5 steek sts at center front and knit back and forth on needles. Read the entire next section before knitting: Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 sts 2 times and 1 st 7 times, then 1 st every 4 rows 6 times. At the same time when the piece measures 50-51-52 cm bind off 6 sts at each side for armhole (3 sts each side of markers). Knit each piece separately. Right front: Continue neck shaping as explained above, and at the same time bind off for armhole every other row: 3 sts 1-1-2 times, 2 sts 2-4-5 times, 1 st 4-4-4 times. After all armhole and neck shaping is complete 23-25-26 sts remain on shoulder. Bind off when the piece measures 72-74-76 cm. Left front: Knit the same as the right, reversing all shaping. Back: = 103-115-127 sts. Bind off for armhole at each side as on front = 81-85-87 sts. When the piece measures 70-72-74 cm, bind off the center 31 sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row = 23-25-26 sts remain on each shoulder. Bind off when the piece measures 72-74-76 cm. Sleeve: Cast on 48-48-52 sts on smaller double-pointed needles with brown; join and place a marker at the join. Knit Pattern 1, then repeat Pattern 2 until the piece measures 9 cm. Change to larger double-pointed needles and knit stockinette st in brown, and when the piece measures 10 cm inc 1 st each side of marker 18-21-22 times: Size S: alternately every 5th and 6th row. Size M/L: alternately every 4th and 5th row. Size XL: every 4th row = 84-90-96 sts. At the same time when the piece measures 35-33-32 cm knit Pattern 3, then knit the rest with brown. At the same time when the piece measures 48-46-45 cm bind off 3 sts each side of marker and knit back and forth on needles. Bind off for sleeve cap at each side every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 3-2-2 times, 1 st 7-11-13 times, then 2 sts at each side until the piece measures 57-57-58 cm, then 3 sts each side 1 time. The piece measures approx. 58-58-59 cm, bind off. Assembly: Sew a marker thread in the center of the steek sts at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker thread, 1st seam = 1/2 st from the marker thread, 2nd seam = 1/2 st from first seam. Cut steek at the center front. Sew shoulder seams. Button band: Pick up approx. 124 to 136 sts (divisible by 4) along left front on smaller needles with brown. Knit Pattern 2 for 2.5 cm, then P 1 row (right side row) for the folding edge – at the same time dec 15 sts evenly distributed on the row. Continue with 2.5 cm stockinette st (for the facing), bind off. Repeat along right front, but after 1 cm make 6 buttonholes evenly distributed along button band, the top buttonhole = 0.5 cm from top edge and bottom buttonhole approx. 7 cm from bottom edge. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound off sts on the next row. Make corresponding buttonholes on the facing. Fold button bands double to wrong side and sew in place. Collar: The collar is knit in 2 pieces, picked up from the top of the button bands and sewn together at the center back. Pick up 7 sts on the top of the right button band. Knit Pattern 5 over all sts keeping the outermost st at center front edge in garter st throughout. At the same time inc 1 st inside of the edge st in garter st every other row 12 times and then every 4 rows 4 times = 23 sts - knit the increased sts in Pattern 5 as you go along. When the collar measures approx. 32-33-34 cm - or length to center back, bind off. Repeat on the other button band. Sew the collar to neckline and together at center back (so that the seam will not be seen when the collar lays flat). Sew in sleeves and sew on buttons. |
