------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP: Increase 2 stitches for the thumb by making 1 yarn over on each side of the marker-stitch. The yarn over is then knitted twisted on the next round to avoid a hole. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles. When finished the mittens are felted in the washing machine. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 56-56-60 stitches with double pointed needles size 5 mm and 1 strand DROPS Lima and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands). Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2), for 8 rounds. Continue with stocking stitch and pattern as follows: Knit 20-20-22, work A.1, knit 20-20-22. When the piece measures 8 cm, decrease 3 stitches evenly before A.1 and 3 stitches evenly after A.1 = 50-50-54 stitches. Insert 1 thumb-marker in the 7th-7th-8th stitch before A.1. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the piece measures 14-16-19 cm, start to increase for the thumb – read INCREASE TIP. Repeat the increase on the outside of the increased stitches every 2nd round a total of 3-3-4 times, then every 3rd round 3-4-4 times = 62-64-70 stitches. Work until the piece measures 21-24-28 cm. Place the thumb stitches and 1 stitch on each side of them on a thread (= 15-17-19 stitches on the thread). On the next round cast on 3 stitches behind the thumb-stitches = 50-50-54 stitches. Continue working until the mitten measures 35-38-42 cm from the cast-on edge – adjust so you have just finished a cable in A.1 (approx. 3 cm left to finished length). Now work and decrease as follows: ROUND 1: Work A.2 over A.1, knit the remaining stitches and decrease 10 stitches evenly over these stitches = 38-38-42 stitches. ROUND 2: Work A.2 and knit the remaining stitches = 36-36-40 stitches. ROUND 3: Work A.2, knit the remaining stitches and decrease 10 stitches evenly over these stitches = 24-24-28 stitches. ROUND 4. Work A.2 and knit the remaining stitches = 22-22-26 stitches. ROUND 5: Work A.2, knit the remaining stitches and decrease 10 stitches evenly over these stitches = 10-10-14 stitches. ROUND 6: Knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 5-5-7 stitches. Cut the strands. Pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 38-41-45 cm from the cast-on edge. THUMB: Place the 15-17-19 thumb-stitches on double pointed needles size 5 mm and knit up 5 stitches behind the thumb (where the 3 stitches were cast on) = 20-22-24 stitches. Knit in the round for 6½-6½-7 cm. Now decrease 4-4-6 stitches evenly spaced (by knitting 2 together) = 16-18-18 stitches. Work 2 rounds without decreasing. On the next round decrease 4 stitches evenly spaced = 12-14-14 stitches. When the thumb measures 8½-8½-9 cm knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 6-7-7 stitches. The thumb measures approx. 9-9-9½ cm. Cut the strands. Pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. Work the right mitten in the same way but inserting the marker in the 7th-7th-8th stitch after A.1. FELTING: To avoid felting the thumb into the mitten, turn it inside out and fasten a small plastic bag over the thumb – fasten with a safety pin – NOTE: Fasten the pin vertically towards the tip of the thumb so it is easy to remove after felting. Turn the mitten back to the right side. Place the mittens in the washing machine together using a detergent without enzymes or optical bleaches. Wash at 40 degrees with normal centrifuge and without pre-wash. After washing, shape the mittens while still wet. Later wash as a normal wool garment. AFTER FELTING: If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm - NOTE: Do not use a short program. If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first. Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment. |
