------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit 2 rows = 1 ridge. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch in 2 different ways: Decrease 1 stitch towards the right on left side of the piece: Knit 2 together. Decrease 1 stitch towards the left on right side of the piece: Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over; on the next row knit the yarn over twisted to avoid a hole. INCREASE AND DECREASE ROWS: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit 2, increase 1 stitch – read INCREASE TIP!, knit until there are 4 stitches left on row, decrease 1 stitch towards the right – read DECREASE TIP! and knit 2. Remember each row from the wrong side is knitted. ROW 2 (=right side): Knit until there are 4 stitches left, decrease 1 stitch towards the right and knit 2. ROW 3 (=right side): Knit 2, decrease 1 stitch towards the left – read DECREASE TIP, knit until there are 2 stitches left, increase 1 stitch, knit 2. ROW 4 (=right side): Knit until there are 2 stitches left, increase 1 stitch and knit 2. COLOUR ALTERNATIVES: The hat in the picture is worked in the colour alternative for NORWAY as described here; if you wish you can use one of the colour alternatives described below. The stripes are worked over the 12 ridges mid front of hat. NORWAY: Colour 1 = off white, colour 2 = red, colour 3 = off white, colour 4 = blue, colour 5 = off white, colour 6 = red ICELAND: Colour 1 = off white, colour 2 = denim blue, colour 3 = off white, colour 4 = red, colour 5= off white, colour 6 = denim blue. SWEDEN: Colour 1 = off white, colour 2 = denim blue, colours 3, 4 and 5 = yellow and colour 6 = denim blue. DENMARK: Colour 1 = off white, colour 2 = red, colours 3, 4 and 5 = off white and colour 6 = red. FINLAND: Colour 1 = off white, colour 2 = denim blue, colours 3, 4 and 5 = off white and colour 6 = denim blue. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SKATING HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The hat is worked sideways in one piece. All rows are knitted (= garter stitch). You increase and decrease on each side as you go. SKATING HAT: PART 1: Use colour 1 – read COLOUR ALTERNATIVES. Cast on 34-38-38-42 stitches with needle size 4 mm and Merino Extra Fine. Work 1 RIDGE – see description above. Then work garter stitch – AT THE SAME TIME as you increase/decrease on each row from the right side – read INCREASE AND DECREASE ROWS. All rows from the wrong side are knitted and are not further described in the text. You can insert a marker on the right side if you wish, so that you can see which side to increase/decrease from. Work ROW 1 – see description above, a total of 11-11-14-14 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 12-12-15-15 ridges from the start. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Work ROW 2 – see description above, a total of 4-4-4-4 times. There are 30-34-34-38 stitches on the row and a total of 16-16-19-19 ridges from the start. Work ROW 3 – see description above, a total of 11-11-14-14 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 27-27-33-33 ridges from the start. Work ROW 4 – see description above, a total of 4-4-4-4 times. Now there are 34-38-38-42 stitches on the row and a total of 31-31-37-37 ridges from the start. Work ROW 1 a total of 4-4-6-6 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 35-35-43-43 ridges from the start. PART 2: Use colour 2. Work ROW 1 a total of 2 times (= 2 ridges). You should still have the same number of stitches on needle. Work ROW 2 a total of 2 times (= 2 ridges). Now there are 32-36-36-40 stitches on the needle. PART 3: Use colour 3. Work ROW 2 one time (= 1 ridge). Now there are 31-35-35-39 stitches on the needle. PART 4: Use colour 4. Work ROW 2 one time (= 1 ridge). Now there are 30-34-34-38 stitches on the row and a total of 41-41-49-49 ridges from the start. The piece measures 19-19-23-23 cm (= mid front of hat). Work ROW 4 one time (= 1 ridge). Now there are 31-35-35-39 stitches on the needle. PART 5: Use colour 5. Work ROW 4 one time (= 1 ridge). Now there are 32-36-36-40 stitches on needle. PART 6: Use colour 6. Work ROW 4 a total of 2 times (= 2 ridges). Now there are 34-38-38-42 stitches on needle. Work ROW 3 a total of 2 times (= 2 ridges). You should still have the same number of stitches on needle. PART 7: Use colour 1. Work ROW 3 a total of 4-4-6-6 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 51-51-61-61 ridges from the start. Work ROW 2 a total of 4 times. Now there are 30-34-34-38 stitches on the row and a total of 55-55-65-65 ridges from the start. Work ROW 1 a total of 11-11-14-14 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 66-66-79-79 ridges from the start. Work ROW 4 a total of 4 times. Now there are 34-38-38-42 stitches on the row and a total of 70-70-83-83 ridges from the start Work ROW 3 a total of 11-11-14-14 times. You should still have the same number of stitches on needle and have worked a total of 81-81-97-97 ridges from the start. Finish by working 1 ridge and cast off with knit on next row. You have worked a total of 82-82-98-98 ridges from the start and the piece measures approx. 38-38-46-46 cm. ASSEMBLY: Top of hat = the side which has 2 whole points and 2 half points. Opening = the side which has 3 whole points (the middle point goes down the forehead). Sew the hat together edge to edge with small stitches as follows: Sew top of hat by sewing the first half point together with the first half of the first whole point. Then sew the second part of the first whole point together with the first half of the next whole point. Then sew the second half of the second whole point together with the last half point. To finish, sew the seam mid back (= cast-off and cast-on edges). |
