Hello!\r\nI started the gloves today and i don\'t seem to get on well with the fisherman\'s rib stitch at the beginning, despite the videos, (well i\'m a beginner yes!) . If i switch it to a simple 64-sts rib stitch would there be a problem or is it that it has to switch between 96 and 64 sts? Would it affect the diameter of the wrist? Thanks!

Dear Mrs Netsiou, you start with some more sts for the English rib part which makes a small flounce, then dec to 48-54 sts for the ribbing K1/P1. If you want to miss the English rib part you can work ribbing K1/P1 only, you will only miss the small flounde at wrist. Happy knitting!

I'm following the Brit English pattern for size S-M. After teh rib P1K1, it sayas to dec 12 sts to get a round of 48 sts. But 64 sts - 12 sts are 52 sts. Am I getting something wrong?

I would call the gloves "High Society". They have a 1950's charm about them - remind me a bit of Grace Kelly ... hence "High Society" after the film she was in.

Knitted DROPS gloves with lace pattern in "Alpaca".
DROPS 131-10 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
ENGLISH RIB (in the round on double pointed needles): 1st round: * 1 YO, slip 1 st as if to K, K 1 *, repeat from *-*. 2nd round: * P tog YO and slipped st, 1 YO, slip 1 st as if to K *, repeat from *-*. 3rd round: * 1 YO, slip 1 st as if to K, K tog YO and slipped st *, repeat from *-*. Repeat 2nd and 3rd round upwards. PATTERN: See diagram M.1. --------------------------------------------------------- LEFT GLOVE: Worked in the round on double pointed needles. Cast on 96-102 sts with Alpaca on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Work first round as follows: * P 1, K 2 tog *, repeat from *-* the entire round = 64-68 sts. Work 4 cm in ENGLISH RIB - see explanation above - adjust so that English rib fits over rib from 1st round. Finish after a round 2 in rib. Then switch to double pointed needles size 2.5 mm and work next round: P1, *K yo and slipped st tog, P1*, repeat *-*. Continue work 5-6 cm rib P 1/K 1. Then work 1 round in stocking st while at the same time dec 16-14 sts evenly on round = 48-54 sts. Insert a marker, now measure piece from here! Make sure not to switch needles on top of hand to avoid loose sts in the middle of pattern. When piece measures 1 cm, beg to inc for thumb gusset and at the same time at 1½ cm work diagram M.1 on top of hand. READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SECTION BEFORE CONTINUING! THUMB GUSSET: Inc 1 st on each side of the next to last st on round - inc by making 1 YO, K the YO twisted on next round to avoid holes (i.e. work in back loop of st instead of front). Inc 1 st on each side of the last inc sts on every 3rd round a total of 5-6 times = 11-13 thumb sts and 58-66 sts in total. DIAGRAM M.1 MID ON TOP OF HAND: There are 23-26 sts mid on top of hand, 24-27 sts inside the hand and 1 thumb st + the inc thumb sts. When piece measures 1.5 cm, work diagram M.1 mid on top of hand over the middle 21-21 sts. THE HAND ONWARDS: When piece measures 6-7 cm, slip thumb sts + 1 st on each side (= 13-15 sts) on a stitch holder. Cast on 3 new sts behind the thumb = 48-54 sts. Continue in stocking st and with diagram M.1. After diagram M.1 has been worked 1 time vertically, work in stocking st until piece measures 9-11 cm. Now slip the first 19-21 sts on top of hand on a stitch holder, keep the next 11-12 sts on needle and slip the last 18-21 sts inside the hand on another stitch holder. Little finger: = 11-12 sts, cast on 1 new st towards sts on stitch holders = 12-13 sts. Work in stocking st in the round for approx. 5½ -6½ cm, then work all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. Hand: Slip sts from stitch holders back on the needles, knit in addition up 2 sts towards the little finger = 39-44 sts. Work 2 rounds in stocking st. Keep the 2 sts that were knit up towards the little finger + 6-6 sts on top of hand and 5-6 sts inside the hand on the needle. Slip the remaining sts back on the stitch holders (= 13-15 sts on top of hand and 13-15 sts inside the hand). Ring finger: = 13-14 sts, cast on 1 new st towards sts on stitch holders = 14-15 sts. Work in stocking st in the round for approx. 7-8 cm, then work all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. Middle finger: Slip 6-7 sts from each stitch holder back on the needle, knit in addition up 2 sts towards the ring finger and cast on 1 new st towards sts on stitch holders = 15-17 sts. Work in stocking st in the round for approx. 7½-8½ cm, then work all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. Index finger: Slip the remaining 14-16 sts from stitch holders back on the needles, knit in addition up 2 sts towards the middle finger = 16-18 sts. Work in stocking st in the round for approx. 6½-7½ cm, then work all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. Thumb: Slip the sts over thumb gusset on the needles and knit in addition up 3 sts along the edge behind the thumb sts = 16-18 sts. Work in stocking st in the round for approx. 5½-6 cm, then work all sts tog 2 by 2. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts and tighten tog. RIGHT GLOVE: Work as left glove but reversed, i.e. inc for thumb gusset on each side of the second st on round instead of next to last st and the sts on top of hand are the last 23-26 sts on round. |
