---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (when working back and forth): Knit on all rows, i.e. knit from right side and knit from wrong side. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, on next row work yarns over as explained below: BEFORE EDGE STITCH: Knit yarn overs in back loop of stitch - to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in garter stitch. AFTER EDGE STITCH: Slip stitch off left needle and put it back on left needle but the opposite way (insert left needle from behind when slipping it back on needle). Knit yarn overs in front loop of stitch - to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in garter stitch. DECREASE TIP: Decrease 1 stitch after marker thread as follows: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 1 stitch decreased). ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- SANTA - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Work piece in the round on double pointed needles, bottom up. Work a loose beard that is worked in at the same time as head and work a rolling edge on hat before working the hat together with head. Fill the Santa with some cotton wool and sew 3 seams to form the body. SANTA: Cast on 40 stitches on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm with colour Black in DROPS Lima. Work as follows: ROUNDS 1-4: Work in stocking stitch (= shoes). ROUNDS 5-7: Switch to colour Khaki and work 3 rounds with A.1 (= pants edge). Then work in stocking stitch with colour Khaki until piece measures 4 cm from cast-on edge. Switch to colour Maroon and work 1 round in stocking stitch while at the same time increasing 8 stitches evenly = 48 stitches. Then work 2 rounds rib = knit 1/purl 1. Then work in stocking stitch until piece measures 9 cm from cast-on edge. Work 2 rounds rib (= knit 1/purl 1) and then 1 round in stocking stitch while at the same time decreasing 8 stitches evenly = 40 stitches. Switch to colour Wheat and work 2 rounds in stocking stitch (= head). Leave the stitches and work a loose beard as explained below. BEARD: Work beard back and forth on needle. Cast on 3 stitches on needle size 3.5 mm with colour Grey. Work in GARTER STITCH back and forth - read explanation above, AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 stitch in each side inside outermost stitch in each side - read INCREASE TIP (= 2 stitches increased). Increase like this every other row (every row from right side) 8 times in total = 19 stitches. Knit one last row from wrong side and increase at the same time 1 stitch = 20 stitches. Now work the beard together with the head as follows: Use colour Red and work 10 stitches on Santa, place beard in front of Santa and work 1 stitch from beard together with 1 stitch from Santa (work stitches together 2 by 2 until all stitches from beard have been worked together with stitches from Santa, then work the last 10 stitches on Santa = 40 stitches. Slip stitches on a stitch holder with approx. same thickness while working a rolling edge on hat. HAT: Cast on somewhat loosely 40 stitches on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm with colour Red in DROPS Lima. Work 4 rounds in stocking stitch (= rolling edge). Now work the rolling edge from hat together with head - use colour Red, place stitches from hat on top of stitches from Santa and knit stitches from the 2 parts together 2 by 2. Continue in the round in stocking stitch until piece measures 14 cm from cast-on edge. Now begin decrease at the top of hat: Insert 4 markers in piece with 10 stitches between each marker. On next round decrease 1 stitch after every marker - read DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every other round 9 times in total = 4 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull strand through the remaining stitches and tighten together. Fasten the strands. NOSE: Cast on 1 stitch on needle size 3.5 mm with colour Wheat. Work 5 stitches in this stitch as follows: knit 1, 1 yarn over, knit 1, 1 yarn over and knit 1 in same stitch. Work 5 rows in stocking stitch back and forth over these stitches. Then cast off as follows from right side: Pass 2nd stitch on right needle over first stitch, pass 3rd stitch on right needle over first stitch, pass 4th stitch over first stitch and finally pass 5th stitch over first stitch = 1 stitch remains. Cut the yarn so that it is long enough to sew the piece tog. Use the yarn to sew the nose mid front on Santa, directly below the rolling edge on hat. POMPOM: Use colour Khaki, make a pompom approx. 1 cm in diameter, and sew it to the top of hat. ASSEMBLY: Fill the Santa with some cotton wool, use colour Black and sew together cast-on edge, tighten yarn a bit in each side, so that the sides are diagonal. Use colour Khaki and baste stitches up and down through both layers on Santa, sew approx. in the middle of body, begin at the bottom of pants edge and sew up along the entire part in colour Khaki. Tighten yarn when sewing so that the Santa gets 2 legs. Use colour Maroon and sew the same way on the Maroon section. Sew 2 seams so that the Santa gets 2 arms, leave approx. 6 cm between the two seams (= mid front on Santa), sew from the bottom of part in colour Maroon and approx. 2-3 cm upwards on Santa. |
