GARTER ST (back and forth on needle):
K all rows.
GARTER ST (in the round):
K 1 round, P 1 round.
PATTERN:
See diagram M.1 and M.2 – pattern in diagram is seen from RS and shows 1 pattern repeat (row 1 = RS).
----------------------------------------------------------

MITTENS: The cuff is worked back and forth on needle from side to side, then pick up sts in cuff and work mitten back and forth on needle.

CUFF: Worked back and forth on needle. Cast on 35-35 sts on needle size 3 mm with 1 thread of each quality. Continue as follows from RS: 1 st in GARTER ST – see above, K5 (these first 6 sts to be folded towards WS afterwards), K8, P2, K2, P4, K4, P4, K2, P1 and 2 garter sts. Work return row from WS with K over K, P over P and garter st over garter st. Continue as follows: 1 garter st, 5 stocking sts, M.2 (= 8 sts), M.1 (= 19 sts) and 2 garter sts. When piece measures approx 20-24 cm - adjust to after 1 full repeat – cast off loosely with K over K and P over P.

RIGHT MITTEN: Pick up 40-48 sts in the outer loops of the garter st row along top of cuff with 1 thread of each quality on needle size 3 mm. NOW MEASURE PIECE FROM HERE! Work garter st back and forth on needle, AT THE SAME TIME when piece measures 1 cm insert 1 marker in st no 21-25 from the right side of piece as seen from RS = thumb st.
On next row inc 1 st each side of st with marker by making 1 YO, on next row work YO into back of loop to avoid a hole. Repeat the inc on every 4th row a total of 5-6 times = 11-13 thumb sts. When piece measures 6-7 cm slip the 11-13 thumb sts + 1 st each side on a stitch holder and cast on 3 new sts behind the thumb = 40-48 sts. Continue in garter st until piece measures 16-18 cm. Work next row as follows: * K2, K2 tog *, repeat from *-* = 30-36 sts. Work 3 rows and then work next rows as follows: * K1, K2 tog *, repeat from *-* = 20-24 sts. Work return row. On next row K2 tog across the row = 10-12 sts. Cut the thread, pull it through remaining sts, tighten and fasten.

THUMB: Slip the 13-15 thumb sts on double pointed needles size 3 mm and pick up 3 sts in the edge behind thumb = 16-18 sts. Work garter st in the round on double pointed needles – see above. When thumb measures 5.5-6.5 cm K2 tog all the way round, cut the thread, pull it through remaining 8-9 sts, tighten and fasten.

ASSEMBLY: Sew mitten tog at the side, edge to edge in outer loops of sts. Fold the 6 bottom sts on cuff towards WS and fasten with neat sts.

LEFT MITTEN: Like right mitten, but insert marker to mark thumb in st no 19-23 st from the right side of piece – as seen from RS).

= K from RS, P from WS
= P from RS, K from WS

= slip 2 sts on cable needle behind piece, K2, K2 from cable needle
= slip 2 sts on cable needle in front of piece, K2, K2 from cable needle
= Bobble: Inc to 5 sts in 1 st as follows: K1, 1 YO, K1, 1 YO, K1, work 4 rows stocking st back and forth over these 5 sts, and work next row as follows: lift 2nd st over first st, lift 3rd st over first st, lift 4th st over first st, lift 5th st over first st = 1 st left.
