Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm .

Long model: If a long model is desired: Increase the measurements at armhole, neck and binding off by 14 (16-18) cm . Finished dimensions = 70 (74-77) cm . Pick up approx. 22-30 sts more on the buttonband and knit 1-2 extra buttonholes. Increase the yarn amount by 50 g of each color.

Pattern: See chart. (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Garter Stitch, when knitting flat: Knit all sts all rows.
Garter Stitch, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl. Repeat from * - *.

Seed stitch (on an even number of sts): All rows: * K 1, P 1*
Seed stitch (on an odd number of sts): All rows: K 1, *P 1, K 1*
Seed stitch (worked in the round):
Row 1: * K 1, P 1 *
Row 2: * knit the purl sts from the previous row and purl the knit sts from the previous row *

Body: Knit the cardigan in the round after the garter st and cut steeks for armholes and at the center front. Cast on 159 (171-183) sts on smaller circular needles with Vienna and knit 4 rows garter st back and forth on the needles. Change to larger circular needles and increase 3 sts at the center front - these sts + edge sts = 5 sts are for the steek and are not knit into the pattern. Join and knit Pattern 4 once, Pattern 1 once, then repeat Pattern 2 to finished dimensions. At the same time, when the work measures 29 (31-31) cm , knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts, 39 (42-45) sts for the front, increase 4 sts (armhole steek sts which are not knit into the pattern), 79 (85-91) sts for the back, increase 4 sts (armhole steek sts which are not knit into the pattern), 39 (42-45) sts for the front. When the work measures 48 (50-51) cm , bind off the center 6 (8-8) sts + 5 steek sts in the front for the neck. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 3 times. At the same time, when the work measures 54 (56-57) cm , bind off the center 19 (21-21) sts at the back for the neck. Bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. When the work measures 55 (57-58) cm , knit 2 rows Vienna, bind off. The work measures approx. 56 (58-59) cm .

Sleeves: Cast on 36 (36-36) sts on smaller double pointed needles with Vienna; join and place a marker at the join. Knit seed stitch for 3 cm . Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 3, then knit the rest with Vienna. After the seed stitch border, inc 1 st each side of marker 20 (20-21) times:
Sizes S/M + M/L: every 3rd row and
Size XL: alternately every 2nd and every 3rd row
= 76 (76-78) sts. When the work measures 44 (43-42) cm , put 2 sts each side of marker on a stitch holder and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Continue to put sts on a stitch holder each side every other row: 12 sts 2 times. When the work measures approx. 48 (47-46) cm , put all sts on double pointed needles again; join and knit over all sts: 2 cm reverse stockinette st for a seam allowance over the cut edge on the body, bind off.

Assembly: Sew a marker thread down into the center of the steek sts each side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker threads, 1st seam = 1/2 st from the thread, 2nd seam = 1/2 st from the 1st seam. Cut up for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approx. 80-86 sts along the left front on smaller needles with Vienna and knit seed stitch for 3 cm , purl 1 row (right side, for the folding edge), 3 cm stockinette stitch, bind off. Fold the edge over the cut edge on the body and sew. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm make 5 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts on the next row). Make corresponding buttonholes on the facing.
Pick up approx. 80 sts around the neck on smaller needles with Cotton Chenille and knit 2 rows garter st. Change to Vienna and knit 5 rows garter st, bind off. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons.
