Thank you for the clarification of the total weight needed. I went to the description of the fiber and found out that one ball is 25 grams, and the length per ball is 200 meters. So I'll need 4 balls and 800 meters of fiber. (It would have been nice if that had been specified in the pattern itself.) QUESTION: Would a starting garter tab be helpful here? It might eliminate the "divit" in the center top edge.

Dear Susan, in this pattern you start working with English rib from the 2nd row, there are no garter stitch tab. Happy knitting!

How MUCH yarn do you need? It says what kind of fiber, but does not specify total yardage/meterage needed.

Dear Susan, the yarn amount is reported next to the picture, on the right. You'll need 100 g of Kid- Silk, colour 33, rust. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- ENGLISH RIB STITCH: An English rib stitch is a stitch worked together with its respective yarn over – the yarn over is therefore not counted as a proper stitch. NOTE on an increase-row there is no yarn over around the increased stitches; these stitches are worked alone – without yarn overs. INCREASE 2 STITCHES: Knit the yarn over and stitch together, but wait to slip them off the left needle, make 1 yarn over the right needle and knit the yarn over and stitch together 1 more time = 3 stitches (= 2 stitches increased). INCREASE 4 STITCHES: * Knit the yarn over and stitch together, but wait to slip them off the left needle, make 1 yarn over the right needle *, work from *-* a total of 2 times and knit the stitch and yarn over together 1 more time = 5 stitches (= 4 stitches increased). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SHAWL – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, top down. SHAWL: Cast on 7 stitches with circular needle size 5 mm and 2 strands Kid-Silk. Purl 1 row. ROW 1 (= wrong side): Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left, 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again (this is to avoid the edge being tight). ROW 2 (= right side): Knit 1 edge stitch, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch – read description above, 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 4 STITCHES in the next stitch – read description above (= mid-stitch), 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again (= a total of 8 stitches increased). ROW 3 (= wrong side): Read ENGLISH RIB STITCH in the explanations above. Knit 1 edge stitch, * 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left on the row. Make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again. ROW 4 (= right side): Knit 1 edge stitch, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again (= a total of 4 stitches increased). ROW 5 (= wrong side): Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left on the row. Make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again. ROW 6 (= right side): Knit 1 edge stitch, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again (= a total of 4 stitches increased). ROW 7 (= wrong side): Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left on the row. Make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! ROW 8 (= right side): Knit 1 edge stitch, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 English rib stitch *, work from *-* until there is 1 stitch left before the mid-stitch, make 1 yarn over and slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 4 STITCHES in the next stitch (= mid-stitch), work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left on the row, make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, INCREASE 2 STITCHES in the next stitch. Knit 1 edge stitch, place this stitch back on the left needle and knit the edge stitch again (= a total of 8 stitches increased). Repeat rows 3-8 onwards until the piece measures approx. 45 cm mid front. CASTING OFF: To avoid the cast-off edge being tight, cast off the yarn overs as normal stitches (i.e. 1 stitch + 1 stitch + 1 yarn over will be 3 stitches when casting off). If the edge is still tight, you can cast off with a needle size larger. Cut and fasten the strands. |
