Would you please explain to me how you can use either Alpaca which is sport weight yarn or Nord which is fingering weight yarn for this pattern. In the U.S. fingering weight yarn is classified a (1) and sport yarn is classified as (2).

Dear Ms. Johnson, in fact the difference between this two qualities is very small (it is mainly determined by the weight of the material used) and both of them gives the same gauge. So you can easily use one or the other without any change in the pattern instructions. You can also look at our Yarn groups - this tab shows a comparison of all DROPS yarns and makes it easier to find alternative yarn. Happy knitting!

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge vertically = knit 2 rows. PATTERN: Hat: See diagram A.1. Scarf: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. Diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from the right side. INCREASE/DECREASE TIP (evenly): To calculate how to increase/decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 83 stitches), minus edge stitches (e.g. 6 stitches) , and divide the remaining 77 stitches by number of increases/decreases to be done (e.g. 20) = 3.9. In this example increase by making 1 yarn over after approx. every 4th stitch. Do not increase over edge stitches. On next row work yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. To decrease in this example knit approx. every 3rd and 4th stitch together. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Worked in the round on a short circular needle, bottom up. Switch to double pointed needles when needed. HAT: Cast on 144-154 stitches on a short circular needle size 2.5 mm with DROPS Alpaca or DROPS Nord. Work rib in the round = knit 1/purl 1 for 9-11 cm. Work 1 round in stocking stitch while at the same time decreasing 24-26 stitches evenly - read INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 120-128 stitches. Switch to a short circular needle size 3 mm, and work A.1 in the round (= 15-16 repetitions of 8 stitches). Work until piece measures approx. 27-29 cm from cast-on edge. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Work 1 round in stocking stitch. * On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 60-64 stitches remain, work stocking stitch in the round for 2 cm *, work from *-* 1 more time = 30-32 stitches remain. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 15-16 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Piece measures approx. 31-33 cm from top and down. ---------------------------------------------------------- SCARF - SHORT SUMMARY OF PIECE: Work piece back and forth on needle. SCARF: Cast on 83 stitches on a needle size 3 mm with DROPS Alpaca or DROPS Nord. Switch to needle size 2.5 mm. Purl 1 row (= wrong side). Work next row as follows from right side: 3 edge stitches in garter stitch, * knit 1, purl 1 *, repeat from *-* until 4 stitches remain on needle, knit 1, and finish with 3 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue rib back and forth like this for 3 cm. Knit 1 row from right side while decreasing 20 stitches evenly – read INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 63 stitches. Purl 1 row from wrong side (knit edge stitches). Switch to circular needle size 3 mm. Work next row as follows from right side: 3 edge stitches in garter stitch, work A.2 (= 9 stitches), work A.1 until 3 stitches remain on row (= 6 repetitions of 8 stitches), and finish with 3 edge stitches in garter stitch. Continue pattern back and forth like this. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Work until scarf measures approx. 147 cm - finish after a row marked with arrow in A.2 to finish the pattern nicely. Knit 1 row from right side while increasing 20 stitches evenly – remember INCREASE/DECREASE TIP = 83 stitches. Purl 1 row from wrong side (knit edge stitches and purl yarn overs twisted). Switch to circular needle size 2.5 mm. Switch to circular needle size 3 mm. Cast off stitches with knit over knit and purl over purl. Scarf measures approx. 150 cm. |
