Bon tricot!

Hi Francoise, just edited the pattern to make it more clear. The reason why you after the garter edge (here you have already joined) start the stockinette from mid back is because you want the transition between rounds mid back and not in the front.

Garter sts (round on double pointed needles): 1st round: knit, 2nd round: purl. Back piece inclusive ear flaps: Cast on 54-62-70 sts on needle size 4 mm. Read all of the following section before knitting it! Knit 1 row garter sts over all sts, *knit 1 row garter sts over the first 12-14-16 sts, turn the piece and knit garter sts back to edge, turn, knit 1 row garter sts over all sts, turn and knit 1 row garter sts over the first 12-14-16 sts (now the other side), turn the piece and knit garter sts over all sts back to edge, knit 1 row garter sts over all sts*, repeat from *-*, but knit 2 less sts each side for ear flap each time (i.e. next row knit over the first 10-12-14 sts each side etc) until there are no sts left on ear flap. Hat: Cast on 26-28-30 sts between the ear flaps mid front on double pointed needles size 4 mm = 80-90-100 sts. Now knit round on double pointed needles. Knit 6 rounds garter sts (see above), cut the thread and change to double pointed needles size 4.5mm. Begin mid back, knit 2 rounds and purl 1 round and finish the hat in stocking sts. At the same time when piece measures 8-9-10 cm mid front insert 5 markers in piece (16-18-20 sts between each marker). Now dec by knitting tog the first 2 sts after each marker on every other round a total of 10 times and then on every round 4th-6th-8th times = 10 sts left. Cut the thread, pull it through remaining sts and sew. The hat measures approx 17-19-21 cm from mid front to the top. SCARF: Knitting tension: 18 sts x 16 rows on needles size 6mm in Rib = 10 x 10 cm. Rib: *K2, P2*, repeat from *-*. SCARF: Loosely cast on 26-32-38 sts on needle size 6mm with Vienna. Knit Rib with 1 edge st each side in garter sts. Cast off loosely in Rib when piece measures 140-160-180 cm. |
