Do you need a circular needle for this or can you knit this shawl on two needles?
30.10.2018 - 23:05DROPS Design answered:
Hi Joan,We recommend that you use a circular needle as there are so many stitches at the end of the piece that keeping them on ordinary needles is difficult. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

Bonjour Mme Audran et merci, les rangs raccourcis permettent d'obtenir ici l'effet voulu. Bon tricot!

Knitted DROPS shawl with stripes and wave pattern in "Delight" and "Fabel".
DROPS 167-17 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
GARTER ST (back and forth): K all rows. 1 ridge = 2 rows K. STRIPES: * 2 rows plum/beige/heather Delight, 2 rows off white Fabel *, repeat from *-*. KNITTING TIP: To avoid long leaps with strand along the sides when working stripes, work the outermost st in each side (both from RS and from WS) with 1 strand off white Fabel + 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight (= 2 strands). To achieve this use either strand from both inside and outside of both balls or make a separate ball in each colour that follow up the shawl along one side. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.4. The diagrams show all rows in pattern seen from RS. INCREASE TIP: Inc 1 st by making 1 YO. On next row (= WS) K YO twisted to avoid hole. ---------------------------------------------------------- SHAWL: Cast on 3 sts on circular needle size 3.5 mm with off white Fabel and work as follows: ROW 1 (= RS): K all sts. ROW 2 (= WS): K 1, 1 YO, P 1, 1 YO, K 1 = 5 sts. ROW 3 (= RS): K 1, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 1 = 9 sts. Insert 1 marker in the middle st (= mid st). ROW 4 (= WS): K 1, P until 1 st remains on row, finish with K 1. Then work stocking st in STRIPES - see explanation above, with 1 edge st in garter st in each side and inc as follows - READ KNITTING TIP and REMEMBER KNITTING TENSION. ROW 5 (= RS): K 1 with 1 strand off white Fabel + 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight (= 2 strands), continue with 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight as follows: 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K until mid st, 1 YO, K 1 (mid st), 1 YO, K until 2 sts remain on row, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 1 with 1 strand off white Fabel + 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight, turn piece. ROW 6 (= WS): K 1 with 2 strands, continue with 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight as follows: P 2, P next YO twisted to avoid hole, P until 4 sts remain on row, P first YO twisted, P 2 and finish with K 1 with 2 strands. ROW 7 (= RS): K 1 with 2 strands, continue with 1 strand off white Fabel as follows: 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K until mid st, 1 YO, K 1 (= mid st), 1 YO, K until 2 sts remain on row, 1 YO, K 1, 1 YO, K 1 with 2 strands, turn piece. ROW 8 (= short row from WS): K 1 with 2 strands, K 2, K 1 twisted (to avoid hole), K 4, turn piece. ROW 9 (= RS): Slip 1st st as if to K, tighten yarn and K 6 sts with off white Fabel and K last st with 2 strands. ROW 10 (= WS): K 1 with 2 strands, continue with 1 strand off white Fabel as follows: P until 4 sts remain on row, P first YO twisted (to avoid hole), P 2 and finish with K 1 with 2 strands. ROW 11 (= short row from RS): K 1 with 2 strands, K 7 with off white Fabel, turn piece. ROW 12 (= WS): Slip 1st st as if to K, tighten yarn and K 6 sts with off white Fabel and K last st with 2 strands. Repeat rows 5-12 back and forth until there are 297 sts on row (piece measures approx. 40 cm along mid st) BUT for every repetition work 2 sts more on short rows until short rows are worked over 26 sts in total in each side, then work short rows over these 26 sts until finished measurements (continue the other sts as before). After every repetition 12 new sts are inc on row. WAVE EDGE: Work with 1 strand plum/beige/heather Delight but work outermost st in 2 strands plum/beige/heather Delight until finished measurements. Work 1 ridge back and forth over all sts with inc in each side and on each side of mid st as before = 303 sts on row – NOTE: From WS K fourth st in from each side (i.e. YO) twisted to avoid hole. K 1 row from RS with inc in each side and on each side of mid st as before and inc in addition 17 sts evenly before mid st and 17 sts evenly after mid st – READ INCREASE TIP (inc alternately after approx. every 8th and 9th st) = 343 sts on row. K 1 row but K fourth st in from each side (i.e. YO) twisted to avoid hole. Now work pattern according to diagram A.1 to A.4 as follows: ROW 1 (= RS): Work pattern according to diagram A.1 over the first 2 sts (work first st with 2 strands), repeat A.2 over the next 168 sts (= 14 repetitions of 12 sts), work A.3 over the middle 3 sts, repeat A.2 over the next 168 sts (= 14 repetitions of 12 sts) and finish with A.4 over the last 2 sts (work last st with 2 strands). Continue pattern like this. When A.1 to A.4 have been worked 1 time vertically, there are 551 sts on row and cast off with picot edge as explained below. CAST OFF EDGE WITH PICOT: Loosely cast off with K from RS and plum/beige/heather Delight as follows: K 1, ((** insert right needle in between the first 2 sts on left needle (i.e. between sts on needle, not through sts), make 1 YO on right needle, pull YO forwards between sts and slip YO on left needle **, repeat from **-** 2 more times (= 3 new sts on left needle). * K first st on left needle, pass first st on right needle over last st worked *)), repeat from *-* 6 times in total and repeat from ((-)) along the entire shawl until 1 st remains, cut the yarn and pull it through last st. |
