I’m sorry but this really is not making sense. I can knit this pattern in the flat reading from right to left on the first row. That would be knit, knit, purl. Turn my work around and then reading from right to left I must do a purl, purl, knit. So I would in effect on the second row be purling over the previous purl stitch, then purling over the previous row knit stitch. And then finally knitting over the previous rows knit stitch. It seems wrong to me.

Hi Maryanne, you read the pattern from right to left. The diagram shows the right side. See the lesson DROPS HERE. Happy knitting!

I don’t understand how to read and knit the pattern. Please explain the direction I need to tread the pattern if I am knitting flat. First row right to left? Second row right to left too? Thank you.

Gauge: 24 sts x 26 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm . Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Garter st, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *. Pattern: See chart (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side. Body: Cast on 206-215-233 (248-260) sts on smaller needles and knit in garter st for 2 cm . Change to larger needles and knit pattern, keeping 2 sts in garter st on each side at the center front (for the seam for zipper). When the work measures 31-34-37 (40-40) cm , knit the next row as follows: 52-55-59 (63-66) sts for the front, 102-105-115 (122-128) sts for the back, 52-55-59 (63-66) sts for the front. Knit the rest of each part separately. Front: = 52-55-59 (63-66) sts. When the work measures 46-50-55 (59-60) cm , put 14-16-15 (16-17) sts at center front edge on a stitch holder for the neck. Then bind off for the neck every other row: 2 sts 1 time, dec 1 st 2 times. Bind off the remaining 34-35-40 (43-45) sts when the work measures 50-54-59 (63-64) cm . Back: = 102-105-115 (122-128) sts. When the work measures 48-51-57 (61-62) cm , bind off the center 34-35-35 (36-38) sts for the neck. Then dec 1 st on each neck edge on the next row. Bind off the remaining 34-35-40 (43-45) sts when the work measures 50-54-59 (63-64) cm . Sleeves: = Cast on 36-38-40 (42-44) sts on smaller double pointed needles; join and place a marker at the join. Knit garter st for 2 cm . Change to larger double pointed needles, knit pattern and increase 12-10-12 (16-14) sts evenly distributed on the first row = 48-48-52 (58-58) sts. At the same time, increase 1 st each side of marker 22-24-27 (26-29) times: Size 3/4: alternately every and every other row Sizes 5/6+7/8 years: every other row Sizes 9/10+11/12 years: alternately every 2nd, every 2nd and every 3rd row = 92-96-106 (110-116) sts. The increased sts are knit into the pattern as you go along. When the work measures 18-22-25 (28-32) cm , bind off 3 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needle. Then bind off on each side every other row: 5 sts 4 times, bind off all sts. The work measures approx. 22-26-29 (32-36) cm . Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Put the sts from the stitch holder onto larger needles and pick up approx. 24-48 sts around the rest of the neck. Knit 4-4-5 (6-6) cm pattern back and forth on the needle (see that the pattern on the front is continued upwards). Then knit 2 rows garter st, bind off all sts. Pick up approx. 90-120 from the wrong side along the left front and collar inside the 2 sts of garter st and knit 1 row stockinette st, bind off. Repeat along the right front, bind off. This makes a placket into which the zipper is inserted. Sew on the zipper. Sew on the sleeves. |
