How to read knitting diagrams

A knitting diagram consists of squares. 1 square = 1 stitch - the symbol definition provide information on how the stitch is worked. The diagram shows all stitches seen from the right side (unless otherwise specified).

A diagram looks like this:

  1. A.1 is the name of the diagram, and refer to the entire diagram.
  2. A.2 is only the part of the diagram within the square brackets.
  3. This number refers to the number of stitches on the 1st row of the diagram.
  4. This is the symbol definition: it explains how each stitch is worked, or in what color (in multicolored patterns).

You read a knitting diagram completely opposite to how you would normally read: from right to left, from bottom to top. In other words: you start with the symbol in the bottom right corner, and work your way leftwards and upwards (see RED in diagram below). If you are supposed to start at a different point/with a different stitch, will this be specified - for example: the different sizes can start at different places in the same diagram (see BLUE box below).

If you are supposed to work several repeats of a diagram (ie: work the same diagram several times in width) you’ll work until the end of the diagram row, and start again with the first stitch for the next repeat.

Back and forth:

When working back and forth, every other row will be worked from the right side and every other row will be worked from the wrong side. Since the diagram shows all stitches seen from the right side, you’ll have to work it in opposite way when working from the wrong side (see BLUE arrows in diagram below): you read the row from left to right, knit stitches are purled, and purl stitches are knit etc (this will often be specified in symbol definition: “knit from right side, purl from wrong side”).

In the round:

When working in the round all rounds are worked from the right side, and the diagram is read solely from right to left. When starting a new round, simply start working the first symbol on the next row in diagram.

Several different diagrams worked consecutively on the row/round:

If you’re working several different diagrams after each other on the same row/round, work as follows: Work 1st row in diagram 1, continue with 1st row in diagram 2, then 1st row in diagram 3 etc. REMEMBER: if you’re working back and forth, the diagram will have to be worked in the opposite order from the wrong side - ie: start with diagram 3, then diagram 2 and lastly diagram 1. They are also worked in opposite way as usual.

In the pattern this can be written as follows: “work A.1, A.2, A.3 a total of 1-1-2-3-4 times”. This means that you first work A.1, then A.2 and finally you repeat A.3 a total of 1-1-2-3-4 times (depending on your size). It is ONLY A.3 that is repeated, A.1 and A.2 are worked 1 time each.

When stitch count doesn’t match whole repeats of diagram:

Sometimes the stitch count is not divisible with full/whole repeats of the diagram in width. For example: A.1 covers 12 stitches and is to be repeated over 40 stitches. In this case you will work 3 full repeats of A.1 (=36 stitches), and then work the first 4 stitches in the diagram over the remaining stitches (see RED line below). This is usually the case where the diagram is a repetitive pattern, so that regardless of working full repeats, the pattern will still be consistent.

Hei Ingebord. Så her skal du strikke diagram * A.1 og A.2 * over alle maskene. I f.eks str.

Bon tricot!

For the Nordic flower sweater Pattern li-180. How do I determine what color the edge stitches are?

29.12.2024 - 02:01

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Emily, the edge stitches aren't worked in the pattern so you will work them in the background colour and not the main colour of the pattern. So you will work them in off white. Happy knitting!

I'm knitting Winter Weekend and don't understand the diagram. As I increase the number of stitches, do I just continue reading the diagram right to left, or do I try to line it up with the round before? I.e., the first round I would make 1, knit 2, purl 2, etc.; in the second one would I knit 2, purl 2 starting in the stitch I made last round, such that the knit-purl pattern is staggered? Or would I knit 3 to account for the make 1 in the round before and then purl 2?

26.12.2024 - 06:01

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Avery, you will be adjusting the pattern as you work. For example, if you had: purl 2, knit 2, yarn over, raglan line, yarn over, knit 2, purl 2; in the next round you will work: purl 2, knit 2, purl 1 twisted (the yarn over in the previous round), raglan line, purl 1 twisted (the yarn over in the previous round, knit 2, purl 2. Then, after the next increase, you will have 2 purl stitches on each side of the raglan line; then purl 2, knit 1, e.t.c. Happy knitting!

20.12.2024 - 10:13

DROPS Design answered:

Bon tricot!

Hi, I am knitting the Winter Pearl Sweater - in the instructions for the yoke, in my first row it tells me to work A.2 and A.3 for 24 stitches, but this seems to end in the middle of the section where I should [slip 1 stitch, knit 2, pass slipped stitch over knitted stitches]. Please could you help?

17.12.2024 - 16:48

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Jess, working A.3 over the next 24 sts means to repeat the 8 sts A.3 a total of 3 times, on the first row you will decrease 1 stitch, but still work 3 repats - see also under PATTERN: A.3 is always counted as 8 stitches.. Happy knitting!

Hi..I am knitting "Wicker Island " Pattern Da-035. Where does one start the pattern for the charts? On the 1st stitch of the beginning of the round, or where the marker is? I have knitted my neck and yoke and now need to start A1. Thank you

11.12.2024 - 21:05

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Michelle, you start working A.1 at the yoke: "When piece measures 3-4-4-4-4-5 cm from marker". Start working A.1, from the first row of the chart, and repeat this row the whole round (so you work A.1 over all the stitches in the round). Continue working A.1 upwards until piece measures 5-6-6-6-6-7 cm from marker. Happy knitting!

Hello there. I am knitting pattern Infinite Sweetness no. 255-24 in Small. I have just knitted the increases on arrow 3 leaving me with 288 stitches. I do not understand the next line on the pattern where it says to increase as shown in the diagram to achieve an extra 48 stitches by arrow 4. I see the extra 2 squares in the row after arrow 3 but don’t understand what it means. Thank you in advance.

05.11.2024 - 18:12

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Russel, after 3rd arrow you get enough stitches to work the 6 sts of each A.1 a total of 48 times, then on the 3rd row with small cables you will increase 1 stitch in each p-section at the beg of each A.1 (see 4th symbol diagram text); so that there are now 7 sts in each A.1 x 48 repeats = 336 sts. On the round with 4th arrow, increase now 24 sts evenly = 360 sts. Happy knitting!

Pind 6: A.1e / A.1f / A.1g / A.1h / A.1g / A.1f / A.1e (inkl. 2 ret i hver side) HVORDAN skal min returpind (vrang) strikkes????

04.11.2024 - 21:25

DROPS Design answered:

Hei Irini. Husk du må strikke diagram A.1a+A.1b+A.1c+A.1d 1 gang i høyden (2 pinner) før du starter med diagram A.1e+A.1f+A.1g+A.1h. Først strikkes 4 pinner retstrik. Så strikkes 5. pinne (fra retten, diagrammene leses fra høyre mot venstre) slik: 2 masker retstrik, A.1a + A.1b + A.1c + A.1d + A.1c + A.1b + A.1a + og 2 masker retstrik (52 masker + 18 kast). 6. pinne (fra vrangen, diagrammene leses fra venstre mot høyre) strikkes slik: 2 masker retstrik + A.1a + A.1b + A.1c + A.1d + A.1c + A.1b + A.1a + og 2 masker retstrik (70 masker). Du har nå strikket diagram A.1a+A.1b+A.1c+A.1d 1 gang i høyden og du skal nå starte på diagram A.1e+A.1f+A.1g+A.1h. mvh DROPS Design

HI, I am making pattern Drops 203-15 (mermaid wrap). will you please explain what the instruction Repeat diagram A1 vertically 8 times in total(=24 stitches decreased in repetition).\r\nWhat does it mean by vertically\r\nThank Yo

03.11.2024 - 17:38

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Susan, 1 repeat vertically = work all rows of the chart. So if A.1 has 8 rows, each time you work these 8 rows = 1 repeat vertically. So for 8 repeats you need to work 8*8 = 64 rows with the A.1 pattern. Happy knitting!
