In this DROPS video we show how to knit a vertical button hole.

These type of buttonholes are in a double-knit stockinette band. Because it's double knit, the band may be too thick if it's heavier than fingering, but we are using a DK weight to show the technique better. The body of the sweater can be any yarn, just match the yarn for the band.
The hole is built around a small length of yarn the same as the band.

Put as many sts on the doubled extra yarn to match width of the button, start and stop with a P st.
Then cast on the same number of sts as replacement around the other side of the extra yarn. After you worked a few more rows, take the 2 open ends on the extra yarn and pull trough loop, and then tighten up the hole, don't over tighten, then ends are weaved in later.

I love the look of this buttonhole and wonder if there are any written instructions to go along with the tutorial. I find it very difficult to follow with no verbal or written instructions to go with the tutorial. The instructor seems to be pointing out specific instructions but not sure what the reference is without sound. Is there a basic formula for this technique? Thank you for any help you can send my way.

Dear Mrs Ledermann, the basic technique is explained above the video, you have then to follow the pattern as it is explained for the number of sts for each buttonhole (which depends to the yarn worked, the tension worked, the size of the buttons, etc. ie the pattern you are working on). In this DROPS video we show how to knit a double band in stocking stitch. We are using a yarn from group B, and it's best not using a heavier yarn than that, rather a smaller like a yarn from group A, even if your garment is in a thicker yarn. From RS pick up appropriate no of sts from the edge of your garment. Since we use a yarn from group B and a size 4.5 mm needle, we are picking up approx 10 sts per 5 cm. If using a group A yarn use a size 3 mm needle and pick up approx 15 sts per 5 cm. Firsts row (WS): k1tbl, *yo, k1tbl*, repeat *-* to end of row. Sts on needle are doubled. 2nd row (RS): knit all yo and slip the purls with yarn in front. 3rd row (WS): knit all slipped sts and slip the purls with yarn in front. Continue like row 3 to desired width on band. Cast off from WS by P2 tog, P2tog, slip the preceding st over as a normal cast off.

How to work a diagonal shoulder, cast on stitches for the neckline and work the back piece together

In this DROPS video, we show you how to work each front piece with diagonal shoulders and short rows, the piece is worked bottom up. Then we show how to increase stitches for the neckline and join the shoulders for the back piece, then continue working top down. An I-cord band is worked on each side. We have already worked one section of the front piece and decreased stitches for the neckline. The video shows how we work 6 short rows (German short rows) on the right front piece, creating a diagonal shoulder. Then we show how to increase 1 stitch 3 times towards the neckline, which is now the back piece. Then we show the same for the left shoulder and finally cast on 12 stitches between the shoulders before the shoulders are knitted together. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. This technique is used among other things in pattern DROPS 255-9, Driftwood Vest, with a different stitch count, number of short rows and cast-on stitches. Pick up stitches at the top of the piece / by shoulder on front piece, pick up 1 stitch in every knitted row down along the piece or skip every 4-5 stitch, inside 1 edge stitch. Look at your pattern what it says. After the pick up cast on 12 stitches for band (= at the bottom of the piece), but it can be different from pattern to pattern. Work band over the 12 stitches at the same time as band is knitted together with stitches picked up along the piece as follows: ROW 1 (= wrong side): Knit 1, * slip 1 stitch on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1 *, work from *-* until 1 stitch remains of the 12 band stitches, slip the next 2 stitches on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece, turn. ROW 2 (= right side): Knit 2 together, *, slip 1 stitch on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece, knit 1 *, work from *-* until 1 stitch remains, slip last stitch on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece, turn. Now continue piece at the end of row where ball is (bottom of front piece). Cast on new stitches for band as an extension of the stitches pick up at the bottom of front piece (cast on stitches from wrong side. We cast on 16 stitches, but it can be different from pattern to pattern). Work band over the 16 stitches at the same time as band is knitted together with stitches picked up along the front piece as follows: ROW 1 (= right side): Slip first stitch on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece, * knit 1, slip 1 stitch on to right needle purlwise with strand in front of piece *, work from *-* until 1 stitch remains of the 16 band stitches, slip last stitch on to right needle knitwise, with strand behind piece, knit next stitch, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked, turn. In this DROPS video we show how to work a double neck edge and bands which are used in the «Love Links» jacket in DROPS 217-18. We have already worked 9 cm to the neck edge. On row 1 we show how to cast off 6 stitches (= band), knit over the next stitches and increase at the same time new stitches evenly over these stitches. Work rib over the last 6 stitches + 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. On row 2 we show how to cast off 6 stitches (= band), purl over the next stitches, purl yarn over twisted = no holes. Work 1 edge st in garter st in each side. Then work the yoke, read a pattern for further information about increases, marker and charts. Then knit up stitches along the bands, remember buttonholes. Then sew band to neck edge inside 1 edge stitch with seam in towards wrong side of garment. Fold rib at the top of neck double in towards wrong side of garment. Sew together opening mid front with small stitches. The jacket in DROPS 217-18 is worked in DROPS Merino Extra Fine, but in the video we use a thicker yarn; DROPS Snow. How to work a loose part of a jacket band separately.

In this DROPS video we show how to work a loose part of a jacket band separately, and then sew it on the front piece afterwards. We have already worked the neck in rib with a buttonhole and 5 garter stitches in each side. These band stitches are worked in GARTERS and put on a stitch holder. Cast on a new stitch on each side, which will later be cast off = edge stitch which is worked in garter stitch. Work the back piece in stockinette stitches and increase according to pattern. Then work the loose bands to the correct size before putting them together with the yoke, then also cast off the edge stitches. Remember to cast off for buttonholes. Sew the bands neatly inside the 1 edge stitch on the yoke. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. A band like this is used in the «Scent of pine Jacket» in DROPS 215-7, you can find the pattern by clicking on the picture below.
