EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN:

----------------------------------------------------------

PATTERN:
Hat: See diagrams A.1 and A.2.
Neck warmer: See diagrams A.3 and A.4.

----------------------------------------------------------

START THE PIECE HERE:

----------------------------------------------------------

HAT - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Worked in the round on circular needle. Switch to double pointed needles when needed.

HAT:
Cast on 48-52-56 stitches on circular needle size 7 mm with 1 strand Air and 1 strand Brushed Alpaca Silk (= 2 strands). Turn piece and work in the round as follows: Purl 1 round. Then work rib (= knit 2/purl 2) for 10 cm. Insert a marker thread on last round worked. NOW MEASURE PIECE FROM HERE! Now work pattern A.1 (= 12-13-14 repetitions of 4 stitches). After increase on first round there are 60-65-70 stitches on round. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When entire A.1 has been worked vertically, repeat the last 6 rounds vertically. When piece measures 15-16-17 cm – adjust so that that the last 6 rows in diagram are finished vertically (approx. 6 cm remain until finished measurements), decrease 1 purl stitch in every section with purl by purling 2 stitches together (= 12-13-14 stitches decreased on round) = 48-52-56 stitches. Then work A.2 (= 4 stitches) over every repetition of A.1, but adjust so that the last 6 rounds in A.1 are finished vertically before beginning A.2. When entire A.2 has been worked, there are 36-39-42 stitches on round. Knit 0-1-0 stitches, knit stitches together 2 by 2 = 18-20-21 stitches. Cut the yarn, tighten together and fasten. Hat measures approx. 31-32-33 cm. Fold rib to form a folding edge that measures approx. 5 cm. Hat measures approx. 26-27-28 cm with 5 cm fold at the bottom.

----------------------------------------------------------

NECK WARMER - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE GARMENT:
Worked in the round on circular needle, bottom up.

NECK WARMER:
Cast on 80-85-90 stitches on circular needle size 8 mm with 1 strand Air and 1 strand Brushed Alpaca Silk (= 2 strands). Knit 1 round. Then work diagram A.3 (= 5 stitches) 16-17-18 times total on round. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When entire A.3 has been worked vertically, repeat the last 6 rounds in diagram until piece measures approx. 23-25-27 cm - adjust to finish after the last 6 rounds in diagram. Now work A.4 over every repetition of A.3. When A.4 has been worked, there are 64-68-72 stitches on round. Cast off stitches with knit over knit and purl over purl. The neck warmer measures approx. 27-29-31 cm vertically.

Diagram

= knit
= purl
= work 2 stitches in a stitch, i.e. work in front and back loop of stitch (= 1 stitch increased)
= insert right needle through the middle of the 3 knit stitches 4 rounds below, make 1 yarn over and pull yarn back to right side so that yarn over is 4½ cm long (yarn over must not be too tight - the knitting tension will be too tight vertically), knit 3, insert right needle through same stitch, make 1 yarn over and pull yarn back to right side so that yarn over is 4½ cm long
= slip 1st stitch (= yarn over made on previous round) knitwise, knit 3, slip next stitch (= yarn over made on previous round) purlwise
= knit 2 stitches twisted together
= knit 2 together
= purl 2 together
= this square is not a stitch because stitch was decreased earlier, go directly to next symbol in diagram

Very pretty but not practical. Won't keep the cold from entering at the neck.
