Pattern instructions

NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. Gauge: 22 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in Pattern = 10 x 10 cm .

Pattern: See charts (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Body: Knit the sweater in the round with armhole steeks. Cast 240 (260-280) sts on smaller circular needles with black; join and place a marker at the join. Knit 4 cm stockinette st, purl 1 row (for the folding edge - measure the work from here). Change to larger circular needles and knit 8 rows stockinette st with black, then Pattern 1 once, then repeat Pattern 2 until the work measures 28 (31-32) cm , then knit Pattern 3 (centering the pattern across the front and back). At the same time, when the work measures 39 (43-44) cm , increase 5 sts on each side (these sts are for the steeks and are not knit into the pattern). After Pattern 3, knit Pattern 4 to finished dimensions. At the same time, when the work measures 59 (63-65) cm , bind off the center front 18 (18-20) sts for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needles. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 3 times. When the work measures 62 (66-68) cm , bind off the center back 34 (34-36) sts for the neck, then bind off 2 sts at each back neck edge on the next row. Bind off when the work measures approx. 64 (68-70) cm .

Sleeves: Cast on 52 (56-56) sts on smaller double pointed needles with black; join and place a marker at the join. Knit 4 cm stockinette st, purl 1 row (for the folding edge - measure the work from here), change to larger double pointed needles and knit 8 rows stockinette st with black, then Pattern 1 once, then repeat Pattern 2. After Pattern 1 (the work measures approx. 5 cm ) inc 1 st each side of marker 29 (27-29) times every 4th row = 110 (110-114) sts, working the increased sts into Pattern 2 as you go along. At the same time, when the work measures 39 (38-37) cm , knit Pattern 5 once, then Pattern 6 once. The work measures approx. 48 (47-46) cm . Now knit 2 cm reverse stockinette st for a seam allowance over the cut edge on the body, bind off.

Assembly: Sew a marker thread down into the center of the increased sts on each side. Sew two machine seams around the marker threads, first seam = ½ stitch from the thread, 2nd seam = ½ stitch from the first seam. Cut up for armholes. Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approx. 94-104 sts (divisible by 2 sts) around the neck on mid-size double pointed needles with black and brown (in pattern); join and knit Pattern 7, purl 1 row (= folding edge), change to smaller double pointed needles and knit 20 rows stockinette st with black, bind off. Fold the edges over against the wrong side and sew.
Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut edge on the body by hand.
