Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on US 4 in pattern = 10 x 10 cm

Pattern: Pattern is shown from the right side and knit entirely in stockinette stitch. One chart equals one repeat of the pattern. Knit pattern M-1 once then knit M-2. Repeat pattern M-2 for body of sweater.

The jacket is worked in the round on a circular needle after the hem, and cuts open for armholes and mid front afterwards.
The hem is knitted back and forth on the circular needle.
Cast on 243 (259-279) sts (includes 2 edge sts) on smaller circular with black. Knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row on RS for Hem edge. Knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch.
Change to larger circular needles and join being careful not to twist the sts.
Cast on 3 sts at the center front and place marker in the middle one for center front. These 3 sts plus the edge stich each side of them constitute 5 sts for center steek or 241 (257-277) sts + 5 steek sts.
Following chart, Knit Pattern 1 then repeat Pattern 2 throughout the body of the cardigan. For each size, Small, Medium or Large, start at the arrow on the chart immediately after the 5 steek sts at the center front.
When the work measures 28 (29-29) cm , or desired length to underarm, knit the next row as follows: 5 center steek sts, 60 (64-69) sts in pattern for right front, increase 4 sts (underarm steek sts), 121 (129-139) sts in pattern for the back, increase 4 sts, (underarm steek sts), knit 60 (64-69) sts in pattern for left front.
When the work measures 43 (44-45) cm , bind off the center 16 (18-18) sts and the 5 steek sts in the front for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needle and bind off at the neck edge on every other row as follows: 3 sts one time, 2 sts two times, 1 stitch three times, and on every 4th row: 1 stitch one time.
When the work measures 51 (52-53) cm , bind off 35 (37-37) sts from the center back for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts on either side of the back neck on the next row. Bind off all remaining sts when the work measures approximately 53 (54-55) cm .

Sleeves: Cast on 50 (50-54) sts on smaller double pointed needles with black and join being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 2 cm stockinette stitch, purl 1 round for Hem edge, knit 2 cm stockinette stitch. Change to larger double pointed needles and, following chart, Knit Pattern 1 then repeat Pattern 2 upwards throughout the sleeve.
When the work measures 5 cm , inc 1 st each side of the marker 33 (33-33) times.
For sizes Small and Medium, increase alternately every 3rd and 4th row.
For Large, increase every 3rd row.
Total of 116 (116-120) sts.
When the work measures 47 (46-45) cm , put two sts on either side of the marker on a holder and knit back and forth. Place 9 sts on to the holder at each side edge every other row 4 times. The work will measure approximately 50 (49-48) cm in reverse stockinette stitch for seam allowance. Bind off.

Assembly: Sew a marker thread down the center of the underarm and center front steek sts. Sew two machine seams on either side of the marker thread 1/2 stitch from the marker thread. Cut up the center marker thread for armholes and the center front. Sew shoulder seams.
Pick up approximately 100-110 sts along the left front on smaller needles with black and knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row (Hem edge), knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Bind off . Repeat for right front, but after 1 cm knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed along the row as follows: 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row (Remember to make corresponding button holes in the facing after the Hem edge.)
Pick up approximately 120 sts around the neck and on smaller needles with black and knit 2 cm in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row (for Hem edge), knit 2 cm in stockinette stitch. Bind off.
Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew. Sew the sleeves to the body with right sides together picking up one stitch in the last row of plain knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and one stitch on the body (steek) after the machine sewn seam. Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the steek edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons.
