Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on largest needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm

Pattern: See chart for pattern. (1 chart equals one repeat of the pattern.) Pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.

Garter Stitch, when knitting flat, knit all sts all rows.
Garter Stitch, when knitting in the round: Row 1, knit. Row 2, purl. One ridge = two rows.

Body: Cardigan is knit in the round on circular needles with steeks at the center front and the underarms.
Cast on 243 (259-279) sts (includes 2 edge sts) on medium circular needles with violet. Knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Change to light olive and purl 1 row for the folding edge. Measure the work from here.
Change to larger circular needles. Cast on three sts and join at the center front being careful not to twist the work. The five sts at the center front (2 edge sts and 3 cast on sts) constitute the steek and are not knitted in the pattern.
Knit 1 repeat of Pattern 1 starting at the arrow on the diagram for your chosen size. After Pattern 1 begin Pattern 2 at the arrow and repeat to finished dimensions.
When the work measures 33 (34-35) cm , knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts at the center front, 54 (58-61) sts for right front, bind off 12 (12-16) sts at underarm, knit 109 (117-123) sts for the back, bind off 12 (12-16) sts at the underarm, knit 54 (58-61) sts for the left front. On the next row increase 5 sts over the bound-off sts on each underarm edge for the steeks. Decrease for the armholes on either side of the 5 steek sts on every row: 1 stitch 6 (8-8) times, and then on every other row: 1 stitch 3 (2-4) times, and then on every 4th row: 1 stitch 2 (2-3) times. Front = 86 (92-92) sts + 5 steek sts, back = 87 (93-93) sts.
When the work measures 49 (51-52) cm , bind off the center 16 (18-18) + 5 steek sts for the front for the neck. Knit the rest of the work back and forth on the needle . Bind off at the neck edge on every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 stitch 2 times and on every 4th row: 1 stitch 1 time.
When the work measures 54 (56-57) cm , bind off the center 29 (31-31) sts for the back neck. Bind off 2 sts on each side of the neck for the back. Bind off when the work measures 56 (58-59) cm .

Sleeves: Cast on 52 (52-54) sts on medium double pointed needles with light olive. Join being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Change to violet and purl 1 row. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit 1 repeat of Pattern 3 being careful to center the pattern on the sleeve. Change to Pattern 4 and repeat upward to the finished dimensions.
When the work measures 5 cm , inc 1 st on each side of the marker 25 (27-26) times, on every 4th row. 102 (106-106) sts.
When the work measures 44 (43-42) cm , put 4 (4 - 6) sts on each side of the marker on a holder and knit the rest of the sleeve back and forth on the needle.
Put sts on the holder on either side for sleeve tops on every other row: 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 stitch 10 (12-15) times, 2 sts 1 time, 3 sts 2 times, 5 sts 1 time.
Then put all sts from the holder back on the needle and knit 2 cm in reverse stockinette for the seam allowance. Bind off loosely.

Assembly: Machine sew a seam down into the middle of the center and underarm steeks. Sew two machine seams on either side of the center seam 2 stitch from the center seam. Cut up the center seam for armholes and the center front. Sew shoulder seams.

For Zippered Version:
Pick up approximately 120-130 sts along the left front on smaller circular needles with violet and knit 5 rows in stockinette stitch back and forth on the needle. Bind off. Pick sts up again from the wrong side and knit 5 rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off. Repeat along the right front. Sew zipper in between the two layers of stockinette stitch.

For Buttoned Version:
Pick up approximately 118-124 sts along the left front on medium circular needles with violet and knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Purl 1 row. Knit 3.5 cm in stockinette stitch. Bind off.
Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm knit 6 buttonholes evenly distributed along the row by binding off 2 sts for each button hole and increasing two sts over the bound off ones on the next row. Remember to knit buttonholes to match in the facing after the purl ridge.
Pick up approximately 120 sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles with violet and knit back and forth in Garter Stitch for 10 cm . Bind off.
Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of plain knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam.
Turn the sweater inside out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the steek edge on the body by hand. Fold all edges over double against the wrong side and sew. Sew in the zipper, or sew on the buttons.
