Bon tricot!

I don't understand the directions for the sleeves I understand putting 5 st.on a holder. When I start knitting back and forth do I continue adding stitches to the holder until I start putting stitches for the sleeve caps on the holder. How many stitches should be on the circular needles for knitting in reverse stockinette.

Dear Mrs Horrall, work row until there are 5 sts before marker, then turn and work next row until 5 sts remain before marker, turn and work 5 sts less (= leave 5 sts more on a st holder), and repeat on the other side (= a total of 10 sts unworked on each side of marker), repeat until you have left a total of 5 times 5 sts on each side unworked. Then work 2 cm in reversed stockinette over all sts (= same number of sts as when you start the short rows). Happy knitting!

Gauge: 23 sts x 30 rows on larger needles in pattern = 10 x 10 cm . Pattern: See charts on pages 11 and 12 of DROPS No. 57. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch. Border: Knit 3 cm in stockinette stitch, purl 1 row (this is the folding edge. Measure the work from here), knit 3 cm in stockinette stitch. Garter Stitch, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Garter Stitch, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *. BODY Knit the cardigan in the round with steeks for the center front and armholes. Cast on 239 (263-287) sts on smaller circular needles with black and knit 6 rows in garter stitch. Change to larger circular needles and at the same time cast on 5 sts at the center front for the steek (these sts are not knitted into the pattern). Join the work and knit in stockinette stitch. When the work measures 16 (17-18) cm , knit Pattern 1. After Pattern 1 knit the next row as follows: 5 steek sts with granite, 1 st granite, 120 (132-144) sts of Pattern 2, 117 (129-141) sts of Pattern 4, 1 st granite. When Pattern 2 and Pattern 4 are complete, continue with Pattern 3 over Pattern 2 and Pattern 5 over Pattern 4. When the work measures 34 (35-40) cm , knit the next row as follows: 60 (66-72) sts for the front, cast on 5 sts for armhole steek, 119 (131-143) sts for the back, cast on 5 sts for armhole steek, 60 (66-72) sts for the front (the steek sts are not knit into the pattern). When the work measures 49 (51-56) cm , bind off the center front 22 (24-24) sts (+ 5 steek sts) for the neck and knit rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off at the front neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 1 time. When the work measures 55 (57-62) cm , bind off the center back 29 (31-31) sts for the neck. Dec 1 st at the back neck edge every row 2 times. Bind off when the work measures 57 (59-64) cm . SLEEVES Cast on 52 (56-58) sts on smaller double pointed needles with black. Join, being careful not to twist the sts. Place a marker at the join and knit 6 rows in garter stitch. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit stockinette stitch. When the work measures 5 cm inc 1 st on each side of the marker 27 (27-26) times every 4th row. 106 (110-110) sts. At the same time, when the work measures 14 (14-14) cm , knit Pattern 1 once, then repeat Pattern 6 to finished dimension (center the pattern on the sleeve). When the work measures 46 (45-43) cm , put 5 sts on each side of the marker on a stitch holder and continue knitting back and forth on the needles. Then put sts on the stitch holder for sleeve caps on each side every other row: 5 sts 5 times. The work measures approximately 49 (48-46) cm . Put all the sts from the stitch holder back on the circular needles and knit 2 cm in reverse stockinette stitch for a seam allowance over the cut edge on the body. Bind off. ASSEMBLY Sew a marker in the center of the steek sts on either side and at the center front. Sew two machine seams around the marker, 1st seam = 1/2 st from the marker, 2nd seam = 1/2 st from first seam. Cut steeks for armholes and at the center front. Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approximately 110 sts along the left front on smaller circular needles with black and knit Border. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm make 6 buttonholes evenly spaced on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 3 sts and cast on 3 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row). Fold the edge over against the wrong side and sew. Pick up approximately 130 sts around the neck and over the placket on smaller needles with black, knit Border for 2 cm instead of 3 cm , bind off, fold the edge over against the wrong side and sew. Sew the sleeves to the body from the right side as follows: Sew alternately a stitch in the last row of knitting on the sleeve before the seam allowance and a stitch on the body after the machine seam. Turn the sweater out and sew the seam allowance from the sleeve over the cut steek edge on the body by hand. Sew on the buttons. |
