Thank you for your reply. I thought that might be what you meant — in the US we describe this as “knit 2 together through the back loops.”

Could you describe how to do the decrease maneuver you describe as “knit 2 stitches twisted together”? Or direct me to a video? I did look . . .

Hi Elizabeth, When working 2 stitches twisted together, you work through the back loops instead of the front loops. Here is a link to a video: https://www.garnstudio.com/video.php?id=1732&lang=en Have a great summer!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.5. The pattern is worked in stocking stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- CHRISTMAS TREE – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, bottom up, decreasing as you go. The tree is sewn together at the bottom and stitches knitted up for the trunk, which is worked back and forth and sewn together to finish. There are 5 different varieties of Christmas tree to knit. TREE: Cast on 42 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and colour olive DROPS Lima. Divide the stitches so there are 10 stitches on the first and third needle and 11 stitches on the second and fourth needle. Insert 1 marker in each side, with 21 stitches between each marker. Work stocking stitch in the round according to your chosen diagram (the diagram is worked twice on the round). Decrease each side as shown in the diagram, i.e., on each side of both markers. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When the diagram is finished, there are 6 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The tree measures 12 cm in height. ASSEMBLY: Fill the tree with a little wadding. Lay the piece flat with the markers on each side. Join 8 stitches on each side of the bottom together with grafting stitches (5 stitches remain mid-back and mid-front). Cut and fasten the strand. Now work the trunk. TRUNK: Use colour almond and knit up 1 stitch in each of the 5 stitches front and back at the bottom of the tree = 10 stitches. Work GARTER STITCH back and forth over these 10 stitches – read description above, for 2½ cm. Cast off. Neatly sew the trunk together along the side and bottom (no wadding in the trunk). HANGING CORD: Cut 1 strand, colour almond, 3 metres in length. Twist the strand until it begins to resist, fold the strand double and it will continue to twist. Tie a knot in the end. Use a needle to thread the cord through the top of the tree. |
