------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE TIP-1 (from right side): INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT BEFORE MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT AFTER MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and knit through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE TIP-2 (from wrong side): INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS LEFT BEFORE MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the front and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the back of the needle. INCREASE 1 STITCH TOWARDS THE RIGHT AFTER MARKER: Use the left needle to pick up the strand between 2 stitches from the row below, pick up the strand from the back and purl through the stitch-loop that lies on the front of the needle. KNITTING TIP: When working short rows, there will be a small hole after each turn. This hole can be closed by tightening the strand or using the technique German Short Rows as follows: Slip the first stitch purl-wise with the strand in front, take the strand over the right needle and tighten well from the back (2 loops on the needle). These loops are worked together on the next row. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- PONCHO - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The pattern uses both long and short needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The piece is worked top down. First the neck is worked in the round from mid-back, then the neckline back and forth with short rows. Then the poncho is finished in the round. If there is a «0» in your chosen size, skip the information and go straight to the next instruction. HIGH NECK: Cast on 80-84-88-88-92-96-100 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 mm, 1 strand DROPS Saga and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands). Knit 4 rounds (= rolled edge). Then work 2 rounds of rib (knit 1 and purl 1). Change to circular needle size 5.5 mm. Work stocking stitch until the neck measures 9-9-10-10-11-12-13 cm after the rib. Remember the knitting tension. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round (= mid-back); the piece is now measured from here. NECKLINE WITH INCREASES FOR SADDLE-SHOULDERS: Now work short rows back and forth in stocking stitch to form the neckline while increasing for the shoulders. Insert 4 markers, without working the stitches and inserting each marker between 2 stitches; you increase first for the shoulders then for the yoke by these markers. Count 12-13-14-13-14-14-15 stitches (= half the back piece), insert marker-1 before the next stitch, count 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 stitches (= shoulder), insert marker-2 before the next stitch, count 24-26-28-26-28-28-30 stitches (= front piece), insert marker-3 before the next stitch, count 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 stitches (= shoulder), insert marker-4 before the next stitch, there are 12-13-14-13-14-14-15 stitches left (= half the back piece). Work and increase as follows; the stitch count on the shoulders remains the same but increases on the front and back pieces: ROW 1 (right side) – read INCREASE TIP-1: Knit to the first marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit 2 (2 increased stitches), turn – read KNITTING TIP. ROW 2 (wrong side) – read INCREASE TIP-2: * Purl to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the left, move the marker onto the right needle, purl 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the right *, work from *-* 1 more time, purl 2 (4 increased stitches), turn. ROW 3 (right side): * Knit to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, *, work from *-* 1 more time, knit to 2 stitches past the previous turn (4 increased stitches), turn. ROW 4 (wrong side): * Purl to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the left, move the marker onto the right needle, purl 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the right, *, work from *-* 1 more time, knit to 2 stitches past the previous turn (4 increased stitches), turn. ROW 5 (right side): * Knit to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, *, work from *-* 1 more time, knit to 2 stitches past the previous turn (4 increased stitches), turn. ROW 6 (wrong side): * Purl to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the left, move the marker onto the right needle, purl 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the right, *, work from *-* 1 more time, knit to 2 stitches past the previous turn (4 increased stitches), turn. ROW 7 (right side): Knit to the first marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to the marker mid-back (2 increased stitches). The neckline is finished and you have increased for the saddle-shoulders 6 times on each side of the shoulder-stitches = 104-108-112-112-116-120-124 stitches. The stitches are divided as follows: 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 stitches on each shoulder and 36-38-40-38-40-40-42 stitches on the front and back pieces. The piece is continued in the round from mid-back, continuing the increases for the saddle-shoulders as follows. INCREASE FOR SADDLE-SHOULDERS: * Knit to the first/next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 (= shoulder-stitches), move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left *, work from *-* 1 more time, knit to end of round (4 increased stitches) – remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase like this every round 12-13-13-15-17-18-19 times: A total of 18-19-19-21-23-24-25 increases in height for the shoulders, including those worked on the neckline = 152-160-164-172-184-192-200 stitches. The stitches are divided as follows: 16-16-16-18-18-20-20 stitches on each shoulder and 60-64-66-68-74-76-80 stitches on the front and back pieces. The piece measures approx. 9-9½-9½-10½-11½-12-12½ cm from the marker mid-back. Now increase for the yoke. INCREASES FOR YOKE: Now only increase across the shoulder-stitches; the stitch count on the front and back pieces remains the same. Continue stocking stitch in the round, increasing 4 stitches as follows: Knit to the first/next marker, move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to the next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit to the next marker, move the marker onto the right needle, increase 1 stitch towards the left, knit to the next marker, increase 1 stitch towards the right, move the marker onto the right needle, knit to end of round (4 increased stitches) – remember INCREASE TIP-1. Increase like this 14-16-18-20-26-28-32 times as follows: SIZES XS and S: Every 1½ cm. SIZES M and L: Alternately every 1 cm and 1½ cm. SIZES XL, XXL and XXXL: Every 1 cm. All increases are finished= 208-224-236-252-288-304-328 stitches. Continue working without further increases until the piece measures 31-33-35-36-38-40-42 cm from the marker mid-back. Change to circular needle size 4.5 mm. Work 2 rounds of rib (knit 1 and purl 1). Knit 1 round then cast off slightly loosely with knit. The poncho measures approx. 33-35-37-38-40-42-44 cm from the marker mid-back and 38-40-42-44-46-48-52 cm from the shoulder. |
