Can the same pattern be followed with circular knitting needles? I am a beginner knitter.

Dear Mrs Agrawal, sure you can then use a 80 cm circular needle and work with the magic loop technique - see this video. Happy knitting!

Hi, I’m trying to knit these socks. I’ma beginner and not sure the numbers add up? I finish up with fewer stitches than 56 after the decreases? Not sure where I’m going wrong and just need to confirm the numbers are accurate, please

Dear Ute, before the decreases you have 78 stitches. Then, decrease 1 stitch before the first marker and 1 stitch after the last marker on top of the foot (= 2 stitches decreased per round). Decrease like this 3 more times (= 4 in total) every round. Now decrease like this again but every alternate/2nd round instead 7 times. So, you have decreased: 78- 2x4 (every round) - 2x7 (every 2nd round) = 78-8-14 = 56 stitches left.

---------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN: ---------------------------------------------------------- HEEL DECREASE: ROW 1 (= right side): Knit until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece. ROW 2 (= wrong side): Purl until 6-7-7 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece. ROW 3 (= right side): Knit until 5-6-6 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch knitted, turn piece. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Purl until 5-6-6 stitches remain, slip next stitch as if to purl, purl 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch purled, turn piece. Continue decrease like this with 1 stitch less before each decrease until there are 16-16-18 stitches on needle. STRIPES: Work * 1 round with colour turquoise/blue, 2 rounds in colour off white *, work from *-*. TIPS FOR STRIPES - transition without notches: To get a nicer transition at the beginning and end of round when working stripes, work as follows: Switch to new colour and work 1 round. On next round work first stitch as follows: Lift the stitch under first stitch on left needle (lift the stitch in back loop) and slip this stitch on left needle. Then knit this stitch together with next stitch on left needle. This way the transition will be less visible. DECREASE TIP (applies to decrease for toes): Begin 3 stitches before marker, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker is between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased). Repeat at the other marker. ---------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ---------------------------------------------------------- SOCKS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: Worked in the round on double pointed needles from leg down to toe. LEG: Cast on 56-60-64 stitches on double pointed needles size 2.5 mm with colour turquoise/blue in DROPS Fabel. Knit 1 round. Switch to colour off white and work rib (knit 1/purl 1) until piece measures 2 cm. Switch to double pointed needles size 3 mm. Work in stocking stich with colour off white until piece measures 3 cm from cast-on edge – AT THE SAME TIME on first round decrease 2 stitches evenly = 54-58-62 stitches. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Now work heel and foot as explained below. HEEL AND FOOT: Work stocking stitch in colour off white over the first 13-14-15 stitches and keep stitches on needle for heel, slip the next 28-30-32 stitches on a thread (mid on top of foot), and keep the last 13-14-15 stitches on needle for heel = 26-28-30 heel stitches on needle. Work in stocking stitch back and forth over heel stitches for 6-6-6½ cm. Insert 1 marker in the middle of last row - measure piece from this marker piece later. Work HEEL DECREASE - read explanation above! After heel decrease work next round in colour off white as follows: Work in stocking stitch over the 16-16-18 heel stitches, pick up 16-16-17 stitches along side of heel, work in stocking stitch over the 28-30-32 stitches from thread on top of foot, and pick up 16-16-17 stitches along the other side of heel = 76-78-84 stitches. Work until mid under heel – round now begins here. Insert 1 marker on each side of the 28-30-32 stitches on top of foot. Now work STRIPES – read explanation above, and read TIPS FOR STRIPES. AT THE SAME TIME decrease in each side as follows: Knit the last 2 stitches before first marker on top of foot together , and knit the first 2 stitches after last marker on top of foot twisted together. Decrease like this on every round 4 times in total and then on every other round 8-7-8 times in total = 52-56-60 stitches. When piece measures 17-18-19 cm from marker on heel, measured under foot, work in stocking stitch with colour off white. Work until piece measures 18-19-20 cm from marker on heel – measured under foot. 4-5-6 cm remain until finished measurements, try the sock on for desired length before decreasing for toes as explained below. TOE: Insert 1 marker in each side of sock so that there are 26-28-30 stitches both on top of foot and under foot. Work stocking stitch with colour off white. AT THE SAME TIME on first round decrease for toes on each side of both markers – read DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every other round 4-7-9 times in total, and then on every round 6-3-2 times in total = 12-16-16 stitches remain. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 6-8-8 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull yarn through stitches, tighten together and fasten. The sock measures approx. 22-24-26 cm from marker on heel – measured under foot. Knit another sock the same way. |
