Knitted mushroom/Christmas decoration in Alpaca with garter stitch or stocking stitch and French knots. Work from bottom up. Theme: Christmas.

NEEDLES:
DROPS DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES SIZE 3 mm
KNITTING TENSION:
26 stitches in width and 34 rows vertically in stocking stitch = 10 x 10 cm.
NOTE! Remember that needle size is only a suggestion. If you have too many stitches on 10 cm switch to larger needles. If you have too few stitches on 10 cm switch to smaller needles.

EXPLANATION FOR THE PATTERN:

GARTER STITCH (worked in the round):
1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round.
INCREASE TIP:
Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, on next round work yarn over twisted to avoid holes.
DECREASE TIP:
Decrease 1 stitch by knitting 2 together.

MUSHROOM – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE:
Work piece in the round on double pointed needles bottom up. Fill the mushroom with cotton wool and embroider French knots at the top of mushroom. Then sew together at the bottom.
MUSHROOM IN STOCKING STITCH:
COLOUR-1:
Stem: colour light nougat. Mushroom top: colour green grass
COLOUR-2:
Stem: colour light nougat. Mushroom top: colour hazelnut
COLOUR-3:
Stem: colour off white Mushroom top: colour red
COLOUR-4:
Stem: colour off white Mushroom top: colour wheat field
MUSHROOM:
Cast on 16 stitches on double pointed needles size 3 mm with the colour for stem. Work stocking stitch in the round for 5 cm.
Then work in stocking stitch in the round over all stitches, AT THE SAME TIME increase 8 stitches evenly (increase after every other stitch) - read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every other round 5 times in total (for every increase work 1 stitch more between each yarn over). After last increase there are 56 stitches on round.
Purl 1 round over all stitches. Switch to colour on the mushroom top. Work 6 rounds in stocking stitch without increase.
Now fasten all strand inside the mushroom before starting decreases.
On next round decrease 8 stitches evenly (knit every 6th and 7th stitch together). Decrease like this every other round - there is 1 stitch less before working 2 stitches together on every round with decrease.
Continue decreases until 8 stitches remain. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 4 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten.
ASSEMBLY:
Fill the mushroom top with some cotton wool. Embroider French knots at the top of mushroom top - sew a few stitches through all layers to fasten the bottom to the top.
Fill the stem with cotton wool and sew shut opening under mushroom.
Fasten one strand DROPS Alpaca in the same colour as mushroom top at the top of mush room for strap.
MUSHROOM IN GARTER STITCH:
COLOUR-1:
Stem: colour nougat. Mushroom top: colour forest green
COLOUR-2:
Stem: colour light nougat. Mushroom top: colour light brown
MUSHROOM:
Cast on 16 stitches on double pointed needles size 3 mm for stem. Work stocking stitch in the round for 4 cm.
Then work in GARTER STITCH in the round over all stitches (with colour on stem) - read explanation above. AT THE SAME TIME on first round increase 8 stitches evenly (increase after every other stitch) - read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every other round (every knit round) 5 times in total (for every increase , work 1 stitch more between each yarn over). After last increase there are 56 stitches on round.
When 1 purl round has been worked after last increase, switch to colour on mushroom top.
Work 6 rounds in stocking stitch without increase.
Now fasten all strand inside the mushroom before starting decreases.

= PICTURE 1: Insert needle from wrong side, and up on front side where you want to begin the French knot.
= PICTURE 2: Then twist thread around the tip of needle 2 to 4 times depending on how large the knot should be.
= PICTURE 3: Insert needle down in piece approx. 0.5-1 stitch on the side of hole where yarn came up and pull yarn out on the wrong side.
= PICTURE 4: When yarn is pulled through piece the twists are tightened and a French knot is made. Fasten yarns on wrong side.
