------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. INCREASE TIP: Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, which is knitted twisted on the next round to avoid a hole. Then work the new stitches in stocking stitch. DECREASE TIP: DECREASE AFTER MARKER-THREAD: Knit 1, slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 1 decreased stitch). DECREASE BEFORE MARKER-THREAD: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker-thread, knit 2 together, knit 1 (= 1 decreased stitch). ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from the bottom up. Stitches are increased for the thumb-gusset then these stitches are slipped on a thread,. Then stitches are decreased at the top of the mitten. Stitches are knitted up around the thumb-opening and the thumb worked in the round to finish. If there is a «0» in your chosen size, skip the information and go straight to the next instruction. LEFT MITTEN: Cast on 49-55 stitches with double pointed needles size 3.5 mm and DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Change to needle size 3 mm (casting on with a larger needle size makes the cast-on edge elastic). Work the first round as follows: Rib (knit 1, purl 1) across the first 4-6 stitches, knit 1, work A.1, rib (knit 1, purl 1) across the last 30-34 stitches. Continue this rib for 10-12 cm. Work the next round as follows: Change to double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Work 5-7 stocking stitches and decrease 1-2 stitches evenly over these stitches, work A.2 across A.1, work 30-34 stocking stitches and decrease 4-5 stitches evenly over these stitches = 44-48 stitches. Work the next round as follows: Work 4-5 stocking stitches, A.2 and 26-29 stocking stitches. Continue this pattern. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. When the piece measures 11-13 cm from the cast-on edge, increase 1 stitch on each side of the last stitch on the round (for the thumb-gusset) – read INCREASE TIP (= 2 increased stitches). Increase on the outside of the increased stitches every 3rd round a total of 5-6 times = 54-60 stitches. Work until the piece measures 16-19 cm from the cast-on edge. Work 1 more round and place the 11-13 thumb-stitches on a thread. Cast on 1 stitch at the back of the thumb = 44-48 stitches. Continue with stocking stitch and A.2 until the piece measures 24-28 cm from the cast-on edge – approx. 14-16 cm after the rib, with 4 cm left to finished length (adjust so you have worked at least 3 rounds after the last cable-round). Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round and 1 marker-thread after 24-26 stitches (= sides, with 24-26 stitches on the back and 20-22 stitches on the palm of the mitten). Start to decrease for the top: Work stocking stitch in the round, with A.3 across A.2. In addition, decrease after/before the marker-threads differently on the back and the palm as follows - read DECREASE TIP: BACK: Decrease 1 stitch after/before the marker-thread every 2nd round 5-6 times. PALM: Decrease 1 stitch after/before the marker-thread every 2nd round 5-5 times, then every round 2-3 times. After all the decreases there are 12 stitches left. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 6 stitches. Cut the strands, pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 28-32 cm from the cast-on edge and 23-26 cm with the rib folded up. THUMB: Place the 11-13 thumb-stitches from the thread on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Knit up 4-5 stitches behind the thumb = 15-18 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round for 6½-7½ cm (½ cm left to finished length). On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 8-9 stitches. Knit 0-1, knit the remaining stitches together 2 and 2 = 4-5 stitches. Cut the strands, pull them through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The thumb measures approx. 7-8 cm. RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 49-55 stitches with double pointed needles size 3.5 mm and DROPS Merino Extra Fine. Change to needle size 3 mm. Work the first round as follows: Work rib (knit 1, purl 1) across the first 30-34 stitches, A.1, rib (knit 1, purl 1) across the next 4-6 stitches, knit 1. Continue this rib for 10-12 cm. Work the next round as follows: Change to double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Work 30-34 stocking stitches and decrease 4-5 stitches evenly over these stitches, work A.2 across A.1, 5-7 stocking stitches and decrease 1-2 stitches evenly over these stitches = 44-48 stitches. Work the next round as follows: Work 26-29 stocking stitches, A.2, 4-5 stocking stitches. Continue this pattern. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. When the piece measures 11-13 cm from the cast-on edge, increase 1 stitch on each side of the first stitch on the round (for the thumb-gusset = 2 increased stitches). Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round and 1 marker-thread after 20-22 stitches (= sides, with 20-22 stitches on the palm and 24-26 stitches on the back of the mitten). Start to decrease for the top: Work stocking stitch in the round, with A.3 across A.2. In addition, decrease after/before the marker-threads differently on the back and the palm as follows - read DECREASE TIP: PALM: Decrease 1 stitch after/before the marker-thread every 2nd round 5-5 times, then every round 2-3 times. BACK: Decrease 1 stitch after/before the marker-thread every 2nd round 5-6 times. Work the thumb in the same way as for the left mitten. |
