How to knit stitches from a loose strand

In this DROPS video we show how you can knit stitches from a loose strand.

For example in a sock / mittens pattern, it tells you to work a loose strand over an amount of stitches. Later on the loose strand is pulled out and the stitches from each side of the strand are put back on double pointed needles. Pick up a few stitches each side and work in the round for a heel / thumb.
