Pattern instructions

NOTE: This pattern is written in British English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. GARTER ST (back and forth):
K all rows. 1 ridge = 2 rows K.

To make the fringes hang nicely they should be moistened, shaken and dried before they are tied on.

Worked back and forth on circular needle and then sewn tog in the sides. Cast on 52 sts (incl 1 edge st in each side) on circular needle size 8 mm with Eskimo. Work in stocking st with 1 edge st in GARTER ST - see explanation above - in each side. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION When piece measures 18 cm, K 1 row on next row from WS (for working straps later). Then work in stocking st with 1 edge st in each side as before until piece measures 106 cm, cast off with K on next row from WS.

LOOPS (for fringes):
Work loops on RS in sts from row worked K from WS. Work on hook size 6 mm as follows: 1 dc in edge st, 1 dc in next st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 LOOSE ch, skip 1 st *, repeat from *-* until 1 st and 1 edge st remain, work 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in edge st = 24 loops. Fasten off.

LOOPS (for ties):
Work a loop in the middle 2 sts (= 26th and 27th st) on cast-on edge. Work on hook size 6 mm as follows: 1 dc in first st, 4 LOOSE ch, 1 dc in next st. Fasten off. Work 1 loop in the middle 2 sts on cast-off edge the same way.

Fold the piece double with cast-on edge against cast-off edge, and sew tog in the sides down to fold inside 1 edge st in garter st.

Pick up 8 sts on circular needle size 8 mm along opening in one side of bag. Work in garter st back and forth for approx. 100 cm, cast off and fasten strap in the other side.

Cut 1 strip of a plastic bag. Thread strip up and down through the 24 straps to avoid them felting tog, tie tog the ends of strap. Do the same for the 2 straps in opening. Place the bag in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at 40 degrees with normal spin but no pre-wash. After wash shape the bag to the right size while still wet and leave to dry flat. At subsequent wash, wash at regular wool programme.

Fasten approx. 17 fringe in the loops after felting - READ FRINGE TIP. 1 fringe = cut 2 lengths of 70 cm each. Fold them double, thread the loop through the loops on the bag, pull the ends through the loop on the fringe. Fasten them evenly in loops (approx. every 4th loop without fringe).

Cut 3 strands, approx. 140 cm long, thread them half way through one of the loops on opening of bag, make a braid of approx. 45 cm, tie a knot, the remaining yarn becomes a tassel. Do the same on the other loop at the opening. Close the bag by tying a bow with the two straps.
