DROPS Design :

Dear Rosemary, make sure to keep the same tension as you worked before, ie if your chain stitches are too loose/wide, this can explain why your M.3 pattern is getting bigger - if you don't manage to make "tighter" chain stitches, you can try working this part with a smaller hook. this video showing chain stitches can also be helpful.
