See diagram A.1. The whole pattern is worked in stocking stitch.

To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 120 stitches) and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 12) = 10.
In this example, knit every 9th and 10th stitch together.

Decrease as follows after the marker: Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (= 1 stitch decreased).

The piece is worked in the round with short circular needle, top down. Change to double pointed needles when necessary.
Cast on 120-132 stitches with circular needle size 2.5 mm and dark blue. Work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) for 4 cm. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm. Knit 1 round where you decrease 12 stitches in both sizes evenly on round - read DECREASE TIP-1 = 108-120 stitches. Work A.1 in the round (= 9-10 repeats of 12 stitches). REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When A.1 has been completed in height, continue working stocking stitch with dark blue. When the piece measures 21-23 cm insert 12 markers in the hat with 9-10 stitches between each. On the next round decrease 1 stitch after each marker – read DECREASE TIP-2 (= 12 stitches decreased). Decrease in this way every 2nd round a total of 7-8 times = 24 stitches left in both sizes. Knit 1 round. On the next round, knit twisted together all stitches 2 and 2 = 12 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The hat measures approx. 26-29 cm from the top down.

Make a pom pom with off white, 8 cm in diameter and fasten to top of hat.

= dark blue
= off white
