To calculate how to decrease evenly, use the total number of stitches on row (e.g. 114 stitches) and divide stitches by number of decreases to be done (e.g. 10) = 11.4.
In this example work alternately approx. every 10th and 11th stitch and every 11th and 12th stitch together.

DECREASE TIP-2 (applies to decrease at the top of hat):
Begin 2 stitches before marker thread and knit 2 together, marker thread, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased).

Worked in the round on a short circular needle, bottom up. Switch to double pointed needles when needed.
Cast on 114-120 stitches on circular needle size 3 mm with Merino Extra Fine. Work rib in the round (= knit 3/purl 3). When rib measures 6 cm, knit 1 round while at the same time decreasing 10-12 stitches evenly - READ DECREASE TIP-1 = 104-108 stitches. Switch to circular needle size 3.5 mm and work in stocking stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! When piece measures 22-24 cm, insert 4 marker threads in the piece, 26-27 stitches apart each marker thread. On next round decrease 1 stitch on each side of all marker threads – READ DECREASE TIP-2 (= 8 stitches decreased). Decrease like this on every other round 9 times in total and then on every round 3 times in total = 8-12 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Piece measures approx. 29-31 cm from top and down. Fold up rib at the bottom.

Make a pompom, approx. 7 cm in diameter and fasten it at the top of hat.
