------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- INCREASE 8 STITCHES: Increase in a knit stitch from the right side, using off-white – make sure the increase is not tight. * Knit the stitch and yarn over together, but do not slip them from the left needle, make 1 yarn over *, work from *-* a total of 4 times and knit the stitch and yarn over together 1 more time. Then slip the stitch and yarn over from the left needle = 9 stitches on the right needle (= 8 stitches increased). On the next row work the stitches into the pattern, the stitch you increased in has gone from 1 knitted stitch to 5 knitted stitches with 4 yarn overs between that will become purled stitches. KNITTING TIP-1: If you are unsure about which colour the next row is worked in, you can see the colour used on the previous row by looking at the colour of the edge stitch and yarn over. ENGLISH RIB IN 2 COLOURS: ROW 1 (= wrong side): Worked with beige as follows: Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left. Make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl and knit 1 edge stitch. Turn the piece. ROW 2 (= right side): Worked with off-white as follows: Knit 1 edge stitch, knit 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together *, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left (not counting the yarn over), make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together and knit 1 edge stitch. Push the stitches back to the other end so you are working from the same side again and change colour - read KNITTING TIP-1. ROW 3 (= right side): Worked with beige as follows: Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, purl 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left (not counting the yarn over). Make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl and knit 1 edge stitch. Turn the piece and change colour. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Worked with off-white as follows: Knit 1 edge stitch, * purl 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together, make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl * work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left (not counting the yarn over), purl 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together and knit 1 edge stitch. Push the stitches back so you are working from the same side again and change colour. ROW 5 (= wrong side): Worked with beige as follows: Knit 1 edge stitch, * make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1 stitch and 1 yarn over together *, work from *-* until there are 2 stitches left, make 1 yarn over, slip 1 stitch as if to purl and knit 1 edge stitch. Turn the piece. Repeat ROWS 2–5 onwards. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SHAWL – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, so you have room for all the stitches. ENGLISH RIB IN 2 COLOURS – read description above – is worked at the same time as stitches are increased regularly from the right side (the right side is the side with knitted stitches in off-white). SHAWL: Cast on 55 stitches with circular needle size 5 mm and beige. Knit 1 row from the right side. Work the next row as follows from the wrong side: ROW 1 (= wrong side): Work ROW 1 in ENGLISH RIB IN 2 COLOURS – read description above. ROW 2 (= right side): Change to off white and work ROW 2 in English rib but AT THE SAME TIME increase in the first and the last knit stitch on row – read INCREASE 8 STITCHES – in description above = 71 stitches. ROW 3 (= right side): Work ROW 3 in English rib with beige; the increased stitches from the previous row are worked into the pattern. ROW 4 (= wrong side): Work ROW 4 in English rib with off white. ROW 5 (= wrong side): Work ROW 5 in English rib with beige. Repeat rows 2 to 5 in English rib without further increases until the piece measures 5 cm from the cast-on edge and then work the next row from the right side with off white as follows. Read KNITTING TIP in explanations above! READ THE NEXT SECTION BEFORE CONTINUING! Now increase in 5 of the knitted stitches on the row AT THE SAME TIME as you work English rib as before. Insert markers in the following knitted stitches (seen from the right side = the knitted stitches are in off-white): The 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th and 30th knitted stitch. The markers should follow onwards in the knitted stitch in the middle of each increase, so that all increases are worked above each other. Work English rib as before and INCREASE 8 STITCHES in each of the knit stitches with markers = 40 stitches increased = 111 stitches. Continue with English rib as before until the piece measures approx. 13 cm (8 cm from the previous increase) and the next row is from the right side with off white. Work English rib as before and INCREASE 8 STITCHES in each of the 5 knit stitches with markers = 40 stitches increased = 151 stitches. Continue with English rib as before until the piece measures approx. 21 cm (8 cm from the previous increase) and the next row is from the right side with off white. Work English rib as before and INCREASE 8 STITCHES in each of the 5 knit stitches with markers = 40 stitches increased = 191 stitches. Continue with English rib as before until the piece measures approx. 29 cm (8 cm from the previous increase) and the next row is from the right side with off white. Work English rib as before and INCREASE 8 STITCHES in each of the 5 knit stitches with markers = 40 stitches increased = 231 stitches. Continue with English rib as before until the piece measures approx. 37 cm (8 cm from the previous increase) and the next row is from the right side with off white. Work English rib as before and INCREASE 8 STITCHES in each of the 5 knit stitches with markers = 40 stitches increased = 271 stitches. Continue with English rib as before until the piece measures approx. 45 cm (8 cm from the previous increase) and the next row is from the right side with beige. CAST OFF: Cast off with beige. To avoid the cast-off edge being tight, the yarn overs are cast off as normal stitches (1 stitch + 1 stitch with yarn over become 3 stitches when casting off). If the cast-off edge is still tight, use a larger size needle when casting off. Cut and fasten the strands. |
