There are many variations of seed stitch and double seed stitch (aka moss stitch).

In this DROPS video we show a version which is worked with alternating K1 and P1 in width. But K2 and P2 over each other in height. We knit 1 edge st each side in garter st (K on all rows).
For the pattern to be visible, we have knitted about 2"/5 cm before we continue as follows:

SEED ST - DOUBLE IN HEIGHT:
(remember K1 edge st each side)
Row 1: * K1, P1 *, repeat from * - *.
2nd row: K over K and P over P.
Row 3: * P1, K1 *, repeat from * - *.
4th row: P over P and K over K
Repeat these 4 rows.

In this DROPS video we show how to knit double seed/moss stitch. When you knit double seed st you have 2 K sts next to each other, and 2 K sts above each other. Also 2 P sts beside each other and 2 P sts above each other. Work 1st row like this: repeat P2, K2 until end of row. Second row: K over K and P over P. 3rd row: P over K and K over P. 4th row: As second row. Repeat row 1-4. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. In this DROPS video we show how to knit double seed (or moss) stitch in the round. When you knit double seed st/moss st in the round on a circular needle you need to cast on a number of sts that can be divided by 4. Then you will get a nice transition between K and P sts all the way around, and you will not be able to see the beginning of the round. You work alternately K 2 and P 2 all way around. Round 1: work K2, P2 around Round 2: work K2, P2 around Round 3: work P2, K2 around Round 4: work P2, K2 around Repeat round 1.-4. It's a good idea to place a marker at the beginning of the round. In our video we show the end of 2nd round, the transition to 3rd round, and then the beginning of 3rd round. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. When you are knitting seed st in the round on a circular needle or double pointed needles it's a great idea to work with an uneven number of sts. You will then get a good transition between K and P sts all the way around, and the beginning of the round will be invisible, You work alternating K1 and P1 around and around. On next round you will then automatically work K over P and P over K, which is what seed st is all about. You must read the pattern to be able to follow. Row 1 (the right side): knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch Row 2 (the wrong side): purl over knitted stitch, knit over purled stitch Repeat row 2. In this DROPS video we show a pair of mittens before and after felting. To prevent the thumb from felting together, turn the mitten to WS (wrong side) and place a narrow silk ribbon along the thumb. Secure the ribbon with a safety pin – NB: insert the pin vertically towards the tip of the thumb so it is easy to remove after felting. Turn the mitten back to RS (right side) before felting. 1. Place the mittens in the washing machine with a wool detergent that does not contain enzymes or optical brighteners. 2. Wash at 40 °C / 104 °F, normal spin, no pre-wash. 3. Stretch and shape the mittens to the correct measurements while still wet. 4. If they turn out too small: soak in water until completely wet, then stretch back to the desired size. 5. Afterwards, the mittens can be washed as any other wool garment.
