How to do an Italian cast off in a rib with K1 / P1 without a needle - tubular cast off

In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off in a rib with K1 / P1 without a needle, also called tubular cast off.

Our sample is a knitted cuff in K1, P1 ribbing.
First you will knit 4 rows where half the sts are worked separate, and this is done by lifting all the P sts and knitting all the K sts. Work like this for 4 rows. Then we separate the sts by putting them on one needle each.
Once that is done make sure both needles are pointing towards the end of the working yarn, which is attached to the needle in the back. Now sew or knit kitchener sts aka grafting sts to join the two sides.

In this DROPS video we show you how to sew an Italian cast-off with a rib of knit 2, purl 2. Start with a long strand-end, the length depends on the number of stitches to be cast off (approx 3 - 4 times the finished length of the piece). All stitches are sewn twice before being slipped off the needle. All knitted stitches are first sewn purl-wise, then slipped off knit-wise and all purled stitches are first sewn knit-wise, then slipped off purl-wise. Begin as follows, before following points 1 to 4 below: Sew the first stitch purl-wise, pull out the strand, insert the needle from the wrong side and between stitches 2 and 3, pull out the strand, then sew stitch 3 knit-wise. In this DROPS video we show how to do an Italian cast off to a rib with knit 1 / purl 1 by sewing the cast off edge with needle and thread. With this technique we get an elastic cast off that is perfect for example on toe up socks, edge around neck, a shawl edge or sleeve edges when working top down. Cut yarn long enough for your cast off, approx 3-4 times the length of the edge you are casting off. Part 1: Start from the right side (the first stitch should be a knit stitch). Insert the needle into the 1st stitch as if to knit, lift the stitch off the needle, insert the needle into the 2nd stitch on the left needle (= knit stitch) as if to purl. Pull the thread through these 2 stitches (= 1 stitch cast off). Part 2: Insert the needle into the 1st stitch (purl stitch) as if to purl and lift the stitch off the needle, then insert the needle from the back side between the 1st and 2nd stitches and insert the needle through the 2nd stitch (purl stitch) as if to knit, pull the thread completely through the 2 stitches. How to do an Italian cast off in the round

In this DROPS video we show how to cast off by sewing an Italian cast off to a rib with 1Knit 1Purl in the round. Before we start casting off, we work 4 rounds where the knit stitches and the purl stitches are worked separately. In the 1st and 3rd round, work the knit stitches, while the purl stitches are loosely lifted off as if they are to be worked purl with the thread in front. In the 2nd and 4th round work the purl stitches and lift the knit stitches loosely off as if they are to be purl. We use a stitch marker to show the beginning of the round, but when we start casting off, we put a stitch marker in the 1st knit stitch and in the 1st purl stitch. Cut the thread, the thread end to be sewn with must be at least 4 times as long as the piece to be cast off. Now the casting off part start. * Insert the needle into the 1st knit stitch as if to knit, pull the thread through and lift the stitch off the needle. Insert the needle into the 2nd knit stitch as if to purl and pull the thread through, let this stitch sit on the needle. Insert the needle from the right in the 1st purl stitch and towards you, pull the thread through and remove the stitch from needle. Insert the needle from the back between the next 2 stitches, turn the needle and insert the needle back, but then in the purl stitch as if to knit and pull the thread through. Repeat from * around until there are 2 stitches left, put the first 2 stitches (stitches with markers), on needle and continue casting off. Since the thread has already been through the first 2 stitches at the beginning of the round 1 time, sew these stitches only 1 time through at the end. Fasten the thread to the back. In this DROPS video we show you how to work knit 1, purl 1, back and forth using the Continental knitting style. This textured pattern is called rib/ribbing and is one of many varieties. BEFORE THE VIDEO STARTS: The textured pattern stitches are divisible by 2. For the pattern to be symmetrical on both sides the stitch count needs to be divisible by 2 + 1 stitch. We have cast on with a stitch count divisible by 2 + 1 stitch and, in addition, 1 edge stitch on each side (the edge stitches are worked in garter stitch = knitted on all rows). We have already worked a few centimeters of the ribbed pattern. THE VIDEO SHOWS: ROW 1: Knit 1, purl 1 to end of row, with 1 edge stitch on each side. ROW 2: The stitches are worked in the same way as those below = knit above knit and purl above purl, with 1 edge stitch on each side. Repeat ROW 2 onward.
