I have just discovered your gorgeous patterns and I have only recently started crocheting. The boogie Nights vest is my first attempt at a piece of clothing. I started on the back but when I got to the armhole and did the 1st row of diagram I found I had about 20 stitches too many. I then tried one of the fronts and the same again. I’m struggling to follow the diagrams (1st time I’ve tried to read one). What am I doing wrong?

Dear Sue, could you indicate how many stitches you have and which size you are working so that we may better help you? Happy crochetting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- CHAIN STITCH: If you work outermost on the hook the chain stitch will often be too tight; 1 chain stitch should be as long as 1 treble crochet is wide. PATTERN: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. CROCHET INFORMATION: At the beginning of each row of treble crochets work 3 chain stitches which replace the first treble crochet, i.e. skip the last stitch on the previous row. The last treble crochet on the row is worked in the 3rd chain stitch at the beginning of the previous row. DECREASE TIP: A.2 shows how to decrease 1 repeat, A.3 shows how to decrease a ½ repeat. All decreases are worked from the wrong side. Beginning of row: Work 1 chain stitch, work slip stitches over the first 6 or 3 stitches in the repeat, work 5 chain stitches and continue A.1B. End of row: Work until there are 3 or 6 stitches left (+ the 3 chain stitches at beginning of previous row), turn. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- TOP – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE: The back and front pieces are worked separately, back and forth. BACK PIECE: Work 81-93-105-117-129 CHAIN STITCHES – read description above, with hook size 4 mm and DROPS Cotton Merino. Work 1 treble crochet in the 4th chain stitch from the hook (2 treble crochets) – read CROCHET INFORMATION, 1 treble crochet in each of the next 77-89-101-113-125 chain stitches = 79-91-103-115-127 stitches. Work pattern as follows (first row from wrong side): A.1C, A.1B 11-13-15-17-19 times, A.1A. Continue this pattern. REMEMBER THE CROCHET TENSION! When the piece measures 27-28-29-30-31 cm, and the next row is a row of treble crochets and chain stitches from the wrong side, work the armholes: Work 1 chain stitch, work slip stitches over the first 6-12-12-12-12 stitches, A.1C, A.1B 9-9-11-13-15 times, A.1A, there are 6-12-12-12-12 stitches left, turn = 67-67-79-91-103 stitches - read DECREASE TIP! In sizes XXL- XXXL continue to decrease: Decrease a ½ repeat on each side, each row from the wrong side, 2-4 times (1-2 repeats decreased on each side) = 79-79 stitches. ALL SIZES: = 67-67-79-79-79 stitches. Continue as follows: A.1A, A.1B 9-9-11-11-11 times, A.1C. When the piece measures 40-42-44-45-47 cm, work the shoulders as follows from the right side: A.1A, work 1-1-2-2-2 repeats of A.1B, A.1C, turn and work back = 19-19-25-25-25 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 44-46-48-50-52-54 cm, finish with a row from the wrong side. Work the other shoulder as follows from the right side: Skip the middle 29-29-29-29-29 stitches for the neck (19-19-25-25-25 stitches on shoulder), work A.1A, 1-1-2-2-2 repeats of A.1B, A.1C, turn and work back. Work until the piece measures 44-46-48-50-52 cm, finish with a row from the wrong side. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Work 39-45-51-57-63 chain stitches with hook size 4 mm and DROPS Cotton Merino. Work 1 treble crochet in the 4th chain stitch from the hook (2 treble crochets), 1 treble crochet in each of the next 35-41-47-53-59 chain stitches = 37-43-49-55-61 stitches. Work pattern as follows: A.1A, A.1B 4-5-6-7-8 times, A.1C. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 27-28-29-30-31 cm, and the next row is a row of treble crochets and chain stitches from the wrong side, work the armholes: Work slip stitches over the first 6-12-12-12-12 stitches, A.1C, A.1B 3-3-4-5-6 times, A.1A = 31-37-37-43-49 stitches. Decrease like this until there are 19-19-25-25-25 stitches left. Continue working until the piece measures 44-46-48-50-52 cm, finishing with a row from the wrong side. Cut and fasten the strand. LEFT FRONT PIECE: Work in the same way as the right but decrease for the armhole at the end of a row from the wrong side as follows: Work A.1C, A.1B 3-3-4-5-6 times, there are 6-12-12-12-12 stitches left, turn. When working the neck decrease at the beginning of each row from the wrong side. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams, leaving a 10 cm split at the bottom. TIES: Work a row of chain stitches, 60 to 80 cm in length, with hook size 4 mm. Cut and fasten the strand. Fold the cord double, thread the loop through a hole at the top of one front piece, pull the ends through the loop and tighten. Repeat on the other front piece. |
