How to knit up stitches for a sleeve and sew the split to the armhole

In this lesson, you'll learn how to knit up stitches on the yoke, knit a split sleeve and sew the split to the armhole.

The garment shown in this lesson is the 'Restful River' sweater (DROPS 239-2), knitted in DROPS Air colour 18, morning mist.

You’ll use either a knitting needle or a crochet hook to knit up the stitches.

1) Begin at the bottom of the armhole (not under the sleeve). Using a knitting needle or crochet hook, knit up the number of stitches specified in your pattern. Knit up stitches inside 1 stitch, this stitch is often worked in garter stitch.

2) Turn and purl back from the wrong side.

3) Continue back and forth, knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side, until you reach the length stated in your pattern (sometimes we recommend short rows across the sleeve cap for a better fit).

4) Then join the sleeve and continue knitting in the round until you reach the correct length, decreasing as instructed and finally working the rib/cuff.

5) When the sleeve is finished, sew the hole under the sleeve together.

6) We'll use a contrasting yarn to clearly demonstrate how the split is sewn to the armhole.

And then you are finished!
