How to read knitting diagrams

A knitting diagram consists of squares. 1 square = 1 stitch - the symbol definition provide information on how the stitch is worked. The diagram shows all stitches seen from the right side (unless otherwise specified).

A diagram looks like this:

  1. A.1 is the name of the diagram, and refer to the entire diagram.
  2. A.2 is only the part of the diagram within the square brackets.
  3. This number refers to the number of stitches on the 1st row of the diagram.
  4. This is the symbol definition: it explains how each stitch is worked, or in what colour (in multicoloured patterns).

You read a knitting diagram completely opposite to how you would normally read: from right to left, from bottom to top. In other words: you start with the symbol in the bottom right corner, and work your way leftwards and upwards (see RED in diagram below). If you are supposed to start at a different point/with a different stitch, will this be specified - for example: the different sizes can start at different places in the same diagram (see BLUE box below).

If you are supposed to work several repeats of a diagram (ie: work the same diagram several times in width) you’ll work until the end of the diagram row, and start again with the first stitch for the next repeat.

Back and forth:

When working back and forth, every other row will be worked from the right side and every other row will be worked from the wrong side. Since the diagram shows all stitches seen from the right side, you’ll have to work it in opposite way when working from the wrong side (see BLUE arrows in diagram below): you read the row from left to right, knit stitches are purled, and purl stitches are knit etc (this will often be specified in symbol definition: “knit from right side, purl from wrong side”).

In the round:

When working in the round all rounds are worked from the right side, and the diagram is read solely from right to left. When starting a new round, simply start working the first symbol on the next row in diagram.

Several different diagrams worked consecutively on the row/round:

If you’re working several different diagrams after each other on the same row/round, work as follows: Work 1st row in diagram 1, continue with 1st row in diagram 2, then 1st row in diagram 3 etc. REMEMBER: if you’re working back and forth, the diagram will have to be worked in the opposite order from the wrong side - ie: start with diagram 3, then diagram 2 and lastly diagram 1. They are also worked in opposite way as usual.

In the pattern this can be written as follows: “work A.1, A.2, A.3 a total of 1-1-2-3-4 times”. This means that you first work A.1, then A.2 and finally you repeat A.3 a total of 1-1-2-3-4 times (depending on your size). It is ONLY A.3 that is repeated, A.1 and A.2 are worked 1 time each.

When stitch count doesn’t match whole repeats of diagram:

Sometimes the stitch count is not divisible with full/whole repeats of the diagram in width. For example: A.1 covers 12 stitches and is to be repeated over 40 stitches. In this case you will work 3 full repeats of A.1 (=36 stitches), and then work the first 4 stitches in the diagram over the remaining stitches (see RED line below). This is usually the case where the diagram is a repetitive pattern, so that regardless of working full repeats, the pattern will still be consistent.

Why do the two opposite sides not match? I have tried the French Garden shawl over and over for the past two weeks. It never works. Why? I have been knitting for over 60 yrs and never had anything that looked so simple be so difficult. Even the number of stitches per side don't match.

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Williams, the both sides of the shawl should be the same, just as shown in the diagrams, maybe you can tell us more: which diagram/rows do you get an issue with - do not hesitate to use the form at the bottom of the pattern to ask your question there. Thanks for your comprehension.

I am trying to knit Drop Baby 43-8 and having trouble once the change to 3mm needles with 109 stitches. Following A3, A4 and then A5 I end up with wrong amount of stitches to complete graph. What do the gaps on the graph mean? After A3 I have done k5 and then 7 stitches into next stitch making 6 stitches to repeat but then end with 4 stitches instead of six I would need to knit 5 and A5. Where am I going wrong

16.06.2022 - 10:43

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Pam, the gaps on the graph don't mean anything; it's an attempt to represent the graphs in an almost 3D manner. In the first row after changing the needles you work: 6 edge sts, A.3 (= 1 stitch), A.4 (= 6 sts), which is repeated 15 times in the row, A.5 (= 6 sts) and 6 edge sts. In total, you have 109 stitches. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

Please can you help me to read M1. And M2. In the pattern 100-6. How do I read or follow the chart of stitches. Thanks.

07.06.2022 - 17:21

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Saroj, starting from RS read diagrams from the right towards the left; then from WS read the 2nd row from the left towards the right, ie row 1. (RS) in M.1 = *slip 1 st as if to knit, K2, psso, P3, slip 1 st as if to knit, K2, psso*, repeat from *-*; row 2 (= WS): *P1, YO, P1*; row 3: *K3, P3, K3*, row 4: *P3, K3, P3*. Happy knitting!

Bon tricot!

05.06.2022 - 12:36

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Rowena, you work A.1, A.3 and A.5 until you work them 1 time in full in height (that is, you work all of the rows upwards). Then, you work A.2, A.4 and A.6 over A.1, A.3 and A.5. Happy knitting!

I am knitting your Drops 130-1 pattern. I am at the lace collar section and cannot figure out the chart. The first row shows14 stitches. when I knit the first stitch then yo twice, and yo twice again, followed by k2 together, yo twice, and knit 2 together, Then knit to end up with18 stitches instead of 14. Please help this old brain figure it out. I'm sure it is very simple. Thank you! Diane

26.05.2022 - 21:39

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Diane, the chart is read from the bottom up, from right to left on the first row, and the next row from left to right. So, in the first row you work 8 repeats of the first 2 stitches of the diagram + 1 stitch in stocking stitch. Happy knitting!

I'm about to start Drops 46-7 (august in blue) - which is done on circular needles but I'm confused as the pattern talks about RS and WS for the stitches between the pattern blocks - I thought it was all RS when on circular?

25.05.2022 - 19:22

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Joy, with a circular needle, you can work both in the round or back and forth. In this pattern you do both: You work until the armhole in the round and then finish the front and back separately back and forth. Happy knitting!

Hei Susanne.

Bon tricot!
