How to make a tubular cast on with waste yarn

In this DROPS video we show how you make a tubular cast on using waste yarn.

This makes flexible and elastic edges, which is perfect for the edge on a ribbed top down sock, ribbed cuff edges etc.
Cast on half the number of sts the pattern call for and work a couple of rows with waste yarn, ending with a RS row. Change to working yarn and work stockinette starting on a WS row. Work a minimum of 4 rows, if thinner yarn work 6 or 8 rows, end with a RS row.
Next row: P1, pick up the yarn in first st below on left needle and K the stitch, P1, repeat pick up and K, continue until end of row. Now cut and remove waste yarn. Continue in rib K1, P1.

It look to me that the knitter here ends up with 19 stitches (instead of 20)?? When she picks up the stitches from below (alternating with stitches on the needle), she starts with purling the stitch on the needle (at 1:40), and ends the row by purling the stitch on the needle (at 2:45) -- which makes it 19 stitches?

Bonjour Manou, si votre ouvrage se tricote sur la base de côtes 1 m end/1 m env, vous pouvez à priori probablement commencer ainsi, n'hésitez pas à tester sur un échantillon au préalable pour être sûre de vous. Bon tricot!

Kan denne metode bruges på rundpinde med glatstrikning? Hvis ikke, findes der så en smart måde at slå elastisk op til f.eks kanten på en kjole?

Bonjour, Je souhaite utiliser cette méthode pour faire une écharpe. Cependant je ne vois pas comment alors rabattre les mailles pour avoir le même rendu. Merci de m'indiquer si vous avez un tutoriel ( je ne l'ai pas vu malgré mes recherches) merci et bravo pour vos vidéos explicites !
