How to cast on with two needles

In this DROPS video we show how you can cast on with two needles.

To avoid the cast on edge being too tight we sometimes recommend to cast on using two needles, then pull one needle out and start working on your garment.

You must read the pattern to be able to follow. You’ll find patterns where this technique is used by clicking on the pictures below.

Our videos do not have sound. We are a worldwide company and our videos are watched by people speaking endless of different languages and many do not understand English. So since there is not a given language for us to use, we instead have written instructions to accompany the video, and then there is no sound to disturb while watching.

In this DROPS video, we show you how to work each front piece with diagonal shoulders and short rows, the piece is worked bottom up. Then we show how to increase stitches for the neckline and join the shoulders for the back piece, then continue working top down. An I-cord band is worked on each side. We have already worked one section of the front piece and decreased stitches for the neckline. The video shows how we work 6 short rows (German short rows) on the right front piece, creating a diagonal shoulder. Then we show how to increase 1 stitch 3 times towards the neckline, which is now the back piece. Then we show the same for the left shoulder and finally cast on 12 stitches between the shoulders before the shoulders are knitted together. We use the yarn DROPS Snow in the video. This technique is used among other things in pattern DROPS 255-9, Driftwood Vest, with a different stitch count, number of short rows and cast-on stitches. In this DROPS video we show how you can cast on with two circular needles. We sometimes recommend this in our patterns to prevent the cast on edge being too tight. When you have cast on the required number of stitches, you pull out one circular needle and start to knit. In this video, we cast on with needle 7 and 8, and it is needle 8 that we pull out. In this DROPS video we show how to start a sock with a flounce, like the “Dainty Duo” socks in DROPS 229-19. We cast on with 2 strands, but continue with 1 strand. In this DROPS video we show how to work an easy picot edge. We work back and forth, but you can also work it in the round. Work like this on row 1: * Knit 7 stitches, slip 2nd stitch on right needle over outermost stitch on right needle (over the last stitch worked), pass next stitch on right needle over outermost stitch on right needle (2 stitches decreased = 1 arch) *, work from *-* the entire row. In this DROPS video we show how we work an easy flounce, like the one used in the «White Pine» socks in DROPS 229-28.
