How to pick up stitches along sides

In this DROPS video we show how you can pick up sts along the side of your work.

Hold the yarn as if you would knit. Put your needle through the holes inside your edge stitch. Wrap yarn around the needle, and pull through.

You could also use a crochet hook to grab the yarn, and then put the st on the needle. If you have worked your edge sts every row e.g in garter as on this piece, every hole represents 1 row.

If you intend to knit stockinette on your new sts, typically you pick up 3 sts for every 4 rows, garter 2 sts for every 3 rows and rib 1 st in each hole.

In this DROPS video, we demonstrate how to knit up stitches around an armhole for a split-sleeve. We begin by showing you how to use a crochet hook to knit up stitches and transfer them onto a knitting needle. Then, we continue by showing you how to work with the stitches using knitting needles. In this DROPS video we show how to knit up stitches around the neck to a jumper with a European shoulder, using a knitting needle or a crochet hook. Then follow the description in the pattern. There are many different ways to work a rib (e.g knit 1 / purl 1, knit 2 / purl 2, knit 1 twisted / 1 purl etc.). And you can work a single neck, double neck or a high neck. In this video we work a double neck with a rib worked like this: knit 2, purl 2, cast off with knit over knit and purl over purl and then fold the neck double to the inside and fasten down. In this video we work with 2 yarn qualities: DROPS Lima colour no. 9029 sage green and DROPS Kid-Silk colour no. 45 soft mint, needle size 5 mm. In this DROPS video we show how to knit up stitches to one sleeve, working short rows, decrease under the sleeve, increase stitches before the rib, switch to smaller needle and a little bit of the cast off (knit over knit, and purl over purl). Insert 1 marker on the top of armhole (NB: This is not where the stitches were knitted up for the front piece, but a few cm down on the front piece, this is the middle of the shoulder). Start in the middle of the new stitches cast on under sleeve and pick up the number of stitches it says in the pattern around the armhole – adjust so that there are the same number of stitches along armhole on each side of the marker. Now work stocking stitch back and forth with short rows over sleeve cap, to give the sleeve a better fit. Then work in the round with decreases under the sleeve. Follow the description in the pattern on how to work short rows, how and how many decreases, how long the sleeve should be and the rib. In this DROPS video we show how to knit up 1 stitch in each of the new stitches that was cast on under the sleeve. We knit 8 new stitches and put a marker (or a marker thread) in the middle of these stitches. In many patterns, you should decrease 1 stitch on each side of stitch of this marker (or marking thread). In this DROPS video we show how to increase to a thumb and how to pick up stitches to a thumb, like it is done to the right wrist warmer thumb in DROPS 214-37. We increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over, on next round work yarn over twisted. We knit 1, purl 1 (= rib). Work the increased stitches in rib, i.e. knit the first stitch, purl 2nd stitch etc. We increase in every other round and show 5 rounds with increases and how they are worked on next round. Then we show how to pick up 6 new stitches behind the thumb. These wrist warmers are worked in DROPS Baby Merino, but in the video we work with a thicker yarn; DROPS Snow.
