How to turn 1 strand into 3 from the same ball of yarn
1. Make a simple loop (like the loop worked when you begin any crochet project) and pull it to approx. 2-3 cm in length.
2. Thread the strand from the skein through this loop, creating a new loop of approx. 40-50 cm.
3. Lay this loop alongside the working strand, so 1 strand becomes 3 strands.
4. Knit or crochet using these 3 strands until there is approx. 2 cm left.
Repeat points 2 to 4.

Can you use three balls of wool simultaneously instead of using your 3-strand method?

Dear Amanda, if you use 3 balls simultaneously using this technique, you would work with 9 strands at the same time, if you don't want to use this technique for getting 3 strands of yarn, you can work with 3 balls working 1 strand each of the 3 balls at the same time - except if I misunderstand your question.
