How to decrease in dc (US) or tr (UK) in each side

In this DROPS video we show how to decrease when crocheting dc (US term) or tr (UK term).

We are showing how to decrease in the beginning of a row and also at the end of a row when crocheting dc (UK tr).
In our example we are dec 3 sts each side of work.
Dec as follows at beg of row: replace first 3 sts with 1 sl st in each. Then work a sl st in next st and then ch 3, the ch 3 replaces 1st dc (UK tr) on row.
Dec as follows at the end of row: Turn piece when 3 sts remain on row.

You must read the pattern to be able to follow. You’ll find patterns where this technique is used by clicking on the pictures below.

The video above can be used in the following patterns

I’m trying to understand binding off in armholes which references decrease tip-1 in pattern 202-30. [dec 3dc 1x, 2 dc 2x and 1dc 1x. How many stitches are minimized per row? Ex. Beg w/60 st. Decreasing 8 per row? Is decreasing “2 dc tog twice” done immediately after the 3sl st dec? I don’t know what dec 1dc is. Thank you for your feedback:)

Dear Mrs Eileen, when you have to decrease 3 sts 1 time, at the beg of row crochet 1 sl st in each of the first 3 sts, then 1 sl st in the next st, 3 ch (= replace 1st dc), now work to the end of the row until 3 sts remain and turn = you have now decreased 3 sts 1 time on each side. Repeat for 2 dc but with only 2 sl sts at the beg of row and turn when 2 sts are left on row. Happy crocheting!

Bon crochet!

Hello. Happy new year! I would be grateful if you could explain in more detail how to work on the sleeve. I am not clear on how to use "Beg by working 86-94-102 dc evenly around the opening for sleeve, beg of row should be under sleeve\" . What does "beg" means in knitting? Thank you in advance.

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Eirini K., beg means here "begin", as you copy the text, you start the sleeve working 86-94-102 dc evenly distributed around the opening for the sleeve, row should start middle under sleeve. Happy crocheting!

Bon crochet!

Hello, please be so kind to explain what exactly is meant by "Crochet in each dc (not in between)". Thank you!

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Doina, this means to insert crochet below both loops from st on previous row and not only in front or back loop of this st. Happy crocheting!
