Clue #1 - And so it begins!

The first clue to this season's Crochet-Along is made of diagrams accompanied by text, and pictures that will show you the progress of the clue, step by step. You will also find videos and the complete diagram for the clue at the bottom, in case you prefer to skip the pictures and work that way!

So let's get started!

First, the colours

In this first step (A.1) you will use the following colour combination:

CASTING ON + ROUND 1: 01 white
ROUND 2: 05 light wash
ROUND 3: 06 light jeans blue
ROUND 4: 17 light lilac
ROUND 5: 16 lilac

CROCHET INFO:
Information written within two * is meant to be repeated everytime it appears a *-* in the pattern.
The symbols in red in the diagrams are the one explained in the text above the pictures.

CASTING ON:
Work 4 chain stitches with white, form them into a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch – see point on circle, the round starts and finishes here.

ROUND 1:
Work 3 chain stitches (= 1 treble crochet).

Work * 1 chain stitch, 1 treble crochet around the chain-stitch ring *, repeat *-* 11 times in total, 1 chain stitch = 12 treble crochets around the chain-stitch ring.

The round finishes with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP below, change to light wash and cut the white strand.

COLOUR CHANGE TIP:
To get the neatest transition when changing colours, work the last slip stitch on the round with the new colour.

ROUND 2:
Work 3 chain stitches.

Work * 2 treble crochets around the next chain stitch, 1 treble crochet in the next treble crochet *, repeat *-* 11 times in total, 2 treble crochets around the last chain stitch.

The round finishes with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP above, change to light jeans blue and cut the light wash strand.

ROUND 3:
Work 4 chain stitches (equivalent to 1 double treble crochet), work 2 double treble crochets in the next stitch, but wait with the last yarn over and pull through on both of these double treble crochets, work 1 double treble crochet in the next stitch and pull the last yarn over through all 4 loops on the hook, 5 chain stitches.

Work *1 double treble crochet in the next stitch, but wait with the last yarn over and pull through, work 2 double treble crochets in the next stitch, but wait with the last yarn over and pull through on both of these double treble crochets, work 1 double treble crochet in the next stitch and pull the last yarn over through all 5 loops on the hook, 5 chain stitches *, repeat *-* 11 times in total.

Finish with 1 slip stitch in the 4th chain stitch at the beginning of the round, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP above, change to light lilac and cut the light jeans blue strand.

ROUND 4:
Work 1 chain stitch.

Work 6 double crochets around each chain-space the complete round (= 72 double crochets).

Finish with 1 slip stitch in the 1st chain stitch at the beginning of the round. Change to lilac, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP above, do not cut the light lilac strand.

ROUND 5:
Work 1 chain stitch.

Work * 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, 1 half treble crochet around the top of the double treble crochet group from the 3rd round *, repeat *-* the complete round (= 12 times total).

Finish with 1 slip stitch in the chain stitch at the beginning of the round, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP above. Change to white and cut the lilac strand. 72 double crochets and 12 half treble crochets.

Put your work a side and crochet the same circle again in this new colour combination:

CASTING ON + ROUND 1: 01 white
ROUND 2: 17 light lilac
ROUND 3: 16 lilac
ROUND 4: 05 light wash
ROUND 5: 06 light jeans blue

Finished!

Here's how both colour combinations of diagram A.1 will look up to and including round 5.

The final result of clue #1 is then 2 circles of approx. 14,5 cm in diameter each.

Are you using a different colour combination than the one we are crocheting with?
Make a small note of which colour number replaces which before starting, by seeing the original materials here.

Linda 06.09.2017 - 08:21:

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but better late than never! Can you tell me what the sizes are of a completed large square, and also the small square?

DROPS Design 06.09.2017 - 09:08:

Dear Linda, you will find the measurements of each square at the end of the matching clue. Happy crocheting!

Kismet Skolnicki 28.05.2017 - 03:46:

I did not know about this crochet along, but I am interested in doing it. I wanted to find out if it is completed and also, I searched for the yarn in the Eskimo color, but they do not match up with the numbers and colors listed in the instructions. Didn't you use a different drops yarn when listing the colors and their numbers? Thanks!

DROPS Design 29.05.2017 - 10:44:

Dear Mrs Skolnicki, we used the following colours in Eskimo in our videos: 53 (instead of drops loves you 8 01), 31 (instead of 05), 12 (instead of 06), 09 (instead of 15), 36 (instead of 17), et 54 (instead of 16). Happy crocheting!

Anja 09.05.2017 - 20:34:

There seems to be difference in instrucions and tutorial - instruction says treble crochet (video is of double crochet), or double crochet (video of sigle crochet) so I am now confused....

DROPS Design 10.05.2017 - 08:48:

Dear Anja, crochet terminology is different in UK-English and in US-English, make sure you are reading the usual language - read more here. Happy crocheting!

DROPS Design 05.04.2017 - 10:22:

Bonjour Mme Clarinette, dans la vidéo, on utilise DROPS Eskimo dans les coloris suivants: 53 (au lieu de drops loves you 8 n°01), 31 (au lieu de 05), 12 (au lieu de 06), 09 (au lieu de 15), 36 (au lieu de 17), et 54 (au lieu de 16). Bon crochet!

Vita Matzen 02.04.2017 - 09:50:

Hej, der bliver en masse garnender. Er der noget i vejen for at man hækler dem med i den næste runde? Du har måske en genial/nemmere måde at hefte ender? God dag. Vh Vita

DROPS Design 06.04.2017 - 08:46:

Hej Vita, Ja du må gerne hækle enderne ind i arbejdet :) eller så gør du sådan her:

Carola 01.04.2017 - 12:47:

Mvh Vivian

DROPS Design 15.03.2017 - 15:14:

Hej Vivian. Se mit svar til dig under videoen :)

Andrea 10.03.2017 - 10:58:

MercuryRain 09.03.2017 - 18:36:

Thank you Helen :D I was freeking out. hahahaha You have a nice day
