Clue #12 - On the edge

In this clue, we will begin the edge which will provide a frame for the blanket. We start by working two simple rounds around our assembled squares.

Already a CAL pro? You can skip the pictures and go straight to the diagram (or video) at the bottom of the page.

Colours

ROUND 1: 01 white
ROUND 2: 05 light wash

Let’s get going!

ROUND 1:
Start in one corner (before one of the long-sides) with 1 slip stitch using white, work 3 chain stitches, read CROCHET INFO below. Work 1 treble crochet around the chain-space (corner), 3 chain stitches, 2 treble crochets around the same chain-space.

CROCHET INFO:
The first treble crochet at the beginning of the round is replaced by 3 chain stitches. The round finishes with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch.

Now work 3 chain stitches, skip 3 stitches, 1 double crochet in the next stitch, but adjust so that there are 45 chain-spaces along the long-side of the blanket.

CORNER: Work 2 treble crochets, 3 chain stitches, 2 treble crochets in the same chain-space.

Work the first short-side in the same way as the first long-side, but adjust so that there are 35 chain-spaces along the short-side. Then work the corners, the next long-side and short-side as described above.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch at the beginning of the round, read CROCHET INFO above, do not cut the strand.

ROUND 2:
Work 1 slip stitch in the next treble crochet, 1 slip stitch around the next chain-space (corner), at the same time as you change to light wash, read COLOUR CHANGE TIP below, cut the white strand. Work 3 chain stitches, 2 treble crochets around the chain-space, 3 chain stitches (corner), 3 treble crochets around the same chain-space.

COLOUR CHANGE TIP:
To get a neat transition when changing colours, work the last stitch before the colour change with the new colour.

Work 1 treble crochet in each of the next 2 treble crochets.

Work 173 treble crochets (in addition to the 5 in each side) evenly spaced along the long-side, by working 4 treble crochets in 38 of the chain-spaces and 3 treble crochets in 7 of the chain-spaces (approx. every 5th chain-space).

Work 1 treble crochet in each of the next 2 treble crochets.

CORNER: Work 3 treble crochets in the chain-space, 3 chain stitches, 3 treble crochets in the same chain-space.

Work the first short-side in the same way as the first long-side as follows: Work 131 treble crochets (in addition to the 5 treble crochets in each side) evenly spaced along the short-side by working 4 treble crochets in 26 of the chain-spaces and 3 treble crochets in 9 of the chain-spaces (approx. every 3rd chain-space).

Then work the corners, the next long-side and short-side as described above.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch at the beginning of the round, do not cut the strand.

Finished!

When both the rounds have been completed, there are 183 treble crochets along the long-sides and 141 treble crochets along the short-sides between the chain-spaces in each corner (= 648 treble crochets and 12 chain stitches on the whole round). The blanket now measures approx. 110 x 85 cm and we have only one clue left!

Hola!

18.05.2017 - 14:00

DROPS Design answered:

Hi Polly. There should be enough yarn if you have kept the crochet tension all through the blanket. For the first round of the edge you will use approximately 16 grams of white (only the first round in the edge needs white color). If you have crocheted too lose or used more white other places, you can choose another color for the first round, but you should not use light wash (05) or light jeansblue (16).
