NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. GARTER ST (back and forth on needle):
K all rows. 1 ridge = 2 K rows.

GARTER ST (in the round):
1 ridge = 2 rounds: * K 1 round and P 1 round *, repeat from *-*.

PATTERN: See diagram A-1. Diagram shows the pattern seen from RS.

Cast on 50-54 sts on double pointed needles size 7 mm / US 10.75 with 2 strands Puddel. Work in garter st in the round - see explanation above. When piece measures 6 cm / 2½'', switch to circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 and red Nepal.
Continue in stockinette st, AT THE SAME TIME on 1st row inc 40-42 sts evenly = 90-96 sts.
When piece measures 13-14 cm / 5"-5½", insert 6 markers in the piece, 15-16 sts apart.
Then dec on the left side of every marker by K 2 tog (i.e. dec 6 sts on round).
Repeat dec every 7th round 12-13 more times = 12 sts remain on needle. Switch to double pointed needles when needed.
After last dec K2 tog around.
Pull a 2 strands of yarn through the remaining 6 sts and fasten tightly.

Make a pompom with Puddel with an approx. diameter of 10 cm / 4''. Fasten at the top of hat.

Cast on 3 sts with 2 strands Puddel on needle size 15 mm / US 19. Work in garter st back and forth on needle, AT THE SAME TIME inc 1 st in each side every 2 cm / 3/4'' a total of 8 times = 19 sts.
Optional bind off for mouth (not shown in picture): When piece measures 21 cm / 8 1/4'', bind off the middle 9 sts, on next row cast on 9 new sts over the bound off sts.
When piece measures 26 cm / 10 1/4'', bind off the middle 11 sts, and finish each side separately = 4 sts on each side.
Continue in garter st and dec 1 st towards the middle on every cm / 3/8, a total of 3 times = 1 st.
Cut the yarn and pull tail through the last st. Fasten.

Cast on 43 sts on needle size 5.5 mm / US 9 with gray Nepal. Work 4 rows in GARTER ST - see explanation above - and then work diagram A-1 with 2 sts in garter st each side.
When piece measures approx. 159 cm / 62½'', stop after one full or half repetition of diagram A-1, work 4 rows in garter st over all sts, then bind off, piece measures approx. 160 cm / 63".
