ADULT'S SWEATER:

Gauge: 23 sts x 36 rows on larger needles in Pattern 1 = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].
1 repeat of Pattern 2 on larger needles = 5.5 cm [2-1/8"]

Rib: * K 1, P 1 *. Repeat from * - *.

Pattern: See charts (1 chart = 1 repeat). The pattern is seen from the right side.

NOTE: When you bind off over the cable of Pattern 2 you will reduce the center 8 sts of Pattern 2 (cable) from 8 sts to 4 sts (make decreases by K 2 tog), then bind off on the next row according to the pattern.

Body: Numbers in ( ) = men’s sizes. Cast on 240-252 (252-260-276-280) sts on smaller circular needles; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib for 5-5 (6-6-6-6) cm [2" -2" (2-3/8" - 2-3/8" - 2-3/8" - 2-3/8")], increasing 124-140 (124-132-156-168) sts evenly distributed across the last row = 364-392 (376-392-432-448) sts. Change to larger circular needles and establish Pattern as follows: * 10-8 (4-8-0-4) sts of Pattern 1, 9-10 (10-10-12-12) repeats of Pattern 2, 10-8 (4-8-0-4) sts of Pattern 1 *, place a marker for the side, repeat from * - * over the back. When the work measures 35-38 (41-43-44-47) cm [13.75" -14-7/8" (16-1/8" - 16-7/8" - 17.25" - 18.5")], knit the next row as follows: bind off 2 sts for armhole, 178-192 (184-192-212-220) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 178-192 (184-192-212-220) sts for the back, bind off 2 sts for armhole. Knit the rest of each part separately.

Front: = (184-192-212-220) sts.
Bind off for armholes every other row: 3 sts 1-1 (0-0-1-2) times, 2 sts 1-1 (1-1-2-2) times, 1 st 2-2 (1-3-2-3) times = 164-178 (178-182-186-186) sts (NOTE: For sizes XL + XXL: see instructions for binding off over Pattern 2.)
On the row before the work measures 56-60 (64-66-68-71) cm [22" - 23-5/8" (25.25" - 26" - 26.75" - 28")], dec 12-16 (16-16-16-16) sts evenly distributed over the center 46-52 (58-58-58-58) sts = 152-162 (162-166-170-170) sts (make decreases by K 2 tog). On the next row, bind off the center 34-36 (42-42-42-42) sts for the neck. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 2 times. On the row before the work measures 60-64 (68-70-72-75) cm [23-5/8" - 25.25" (26.75" - 27-5/8" - 28.25" - 29.5")], dec 12-12 (12-12-12-12) sts evenly distributed over each shoulder (make decreases by K 2 tog). Bind off on the next row - the work measures approx. 60-64 (68-70-72-75) cm [23-5/8" - 25.25" (26.75" - 27-5/8" - 28.25" - 29.5")].

Back: = 178-192 (184-192-212-220) sts.
Bind off for armholes as on the front = 164-178 (178-182-186-186) sts (NOTE: For sizes XL + XXL: see instructions for binding off over Pattern 2.)
On the row before the work measures 58-62 (66-68-70-73) cm [22-7/8" - 24-3/8" (26" - 26.75" - 27-5/8" - 28.75")], dec 12-16 (16-16-16-16) sts evenly distributed over the center 54-60 (66-66-66-66) sts (make decreases by K 2 tog). On the next row, bind off the center 42-44 (50-50-50-50) sts for the neck. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 sts 1 time, 1 st 1 time.
On the row before the work measures 60-64 (68-70-72-75) cm [23-5/8" - 25.25" (26.75" - 27-5/8" - 28.25" - 29.5")], dec 12-12 (12-12-12-12) sts evenly distributed on each shoulder (make decreases by K 2 tog). Bind off on the next row - the work measures approx. 60-64 (68-70-72-75) cm [23-5/8" - 25.25" (26.75" - 27-5/8" - 28.25" - 29.5")].

Sleeves: Cast on 62-64 (68-68-70-70) sts on smaller double pointed needles; join and place a marker at the join. Knit rib for 5-5 (6-6-6-6) cm [2" -2" (2-3/8" - 2-3/8" - 2-3/8" - 2-3/8")], increasing 28-30 (26-30-28-28) sts evenly distributed across the last row = 90-94 (94-98-98-98) sts. Change to larger double pointed needles and establish Pattern as follows: 0-2 (2-4-4-4) sts of Pattern 1, 5 repeats of Pattern 2, 0-2 (2-4-4-4) sts of Pattern 1. After the rib, inc 1 st each side of marker 26-26 (28-26-29-29) times:
Sizes S/M + M/L + (XL + XXL): every 5th row
Sizes (S/M + M/L): alternately every 5th and 6th row = 142-146 (150-150-156-156) sts. Knit the increased sts into Pattern 1 as you go along. When the work measures 46-46 (51-51-51-51) cm [18-1/8" - 18-1/8" (20"-20"-20"-20")], bind off 2 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off for sleeve caps each side every other row (see instructions for binding off over Pattern 2):
Sizes S/M + M/L: 3 sts 12 times
Size (S/M): 5 sts 8 times
Size (M/L): 4 sts 10 times
Size (XL): 3 sts 12 times,
Size (XXL): 3 sts 3 times, 2 sts 9 times, 3 sts 3 times.
On the next row, dec 12-12 (12-12-20-20) sts evenly distributed over the remaining sts on the sleeve top (make decreases by K 2 tog). Bind off - the work measures approx. 53-53 (56-57-58-60) cm [20-7/8" - 20-7/8" (22" - 22.5" - 22-7/8" - 23-5/8")].

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approx. 96-100 sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles; join and knit 2 cm [0.75"] rib, purl 1 row, 2 cm [0.75"] stockinette st, bind off. Sew on the sleeves.





CHILD'S SWEATER:

Sizes: 2 - 3/4 - 5/6 - 7/8 (9/10 - 11/12 - 13/14) years

DROPS 2.5 mm [US 1] and 3.5 mm [US 4] circular and double pointed needles, or sizes needed to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge: 23 sts x 36 rows on larger needles in Pattern 1 = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"].
1 repeat of Pattern 2 on larger needles = 5.5 cm [2-1/8"]

Rib: * K 1, P 1 *. Repeat from * - *.

Change to larger circular needles and establish Pattern as follows: * 4-8-6-4 (6-8-6) sts of Pattern 1, 6-6-7-8 (8-8-9) repeats of Pattern 2, 4-8-6-4 (6-8-6) sts of Pattern 1*, place a marker for the side, repeat from * - * over the back. When the work measures 27-27-29-32 (33-34-37) cm [10-5/8" - 10-5/8" - 11-3/8" - 12-5/8" (13" - 13-3/8" - 14.5")], knit the next row as follows: bind off 2 sts for armhole, 112-120-134-148 (152-156-170) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 112-120-134-148 (152-156-170) sts for the back, bind off 2 sts for armhole. Knit the rest of each part separately.

Front: = 112-120-134-148 (152-156-170) sts. Bind off for armholes every other row: 2 sts 1-1-1-1 (1-1-2) times, 1 st 3-3-2-3 (3-3-3) times = 102-110-126-138 (142-146-156) sts. After the rib, inc 1 st each side of marker 9-18-18-21 (23-25-25) times:
Size 2 years: every 8th row
Sizes 3/4 + 5/6 + 7/8 years: alternately every 4th and 5th row
Sizes 9/10 + 11/12 + 13/14 years: every 5th row
= 80-98-108-118 (122-128-128) sts. Knit the increased sts into Pattern 1 as you go along. When the work measures 26-29-32-35 (40-43-46) cm [10.25" - 11-3/8" - 12-5/8" - 13.75" (15.75" - 16-7/8" - 18-1/8")], bind off 2 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needles. Bind off for sleeve caps every other row: 3-4-4-4 (5-5-4) sts 8-8-8-8 (8-8-10) times (see instructions for binding off over Pattern 2). On the next row, dec 4-8-8-12 (8-8-8) sts evenly distributed over the remaining sts on the sleeve cap (make decreases by K 2 tog). Bind off. The work measures approx. 31-34-37-40 (45-48-52) cm [12.25" - 13-3/8" - 14.5" - 15.75" (17.75" - 18-7/8" - 20.5")]

Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approx. 80-90-90-92 (92-96-100) sts around the neck on smaller double pointed needles; join and knit 2 cm [0.75"] rib, purl 1 row, 2 cm [0.75"] stockinette st, bind off. Sew on the sleeves.
