In the pattern it says to start the body with smaller circular needles 3.5mm) After doing the 4 rows in garter stitch with brown did the pattern omit the fact that you should then change to larger needles (5mm) ?

Dear Mrs Artale, that's corrrect you have to change to larger needles (5 mm) after the edge in garter st. Happy knitting!

Gauge: 17 sts and 22 rows on larger needles in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4"). Pattern: See chart. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette st. Garter st, when knitting flat: Knit all sts, all rows. Garter st, when knitting in the round: *Rnd 1, knit. Rnd 2, purl.* Repeat from * - *. Button band: If buttons are desired instead of a zipper: When the center front increases are finished and the work measures approx. 8 cm [3-1/8"], inc 3 sts at the center of the front and knit these in garter st. These 3 sts plus the two edge sts form the button band. When binding off for armholes there are then 3 sts more on each front piece. When binding off for the neck bind off these 3 sts first, then bind off according to the pattern. When the work measures 9-19-29 and 39 cm [3.5", 7.5", 11-3/8", and 15.25"], make buttonholes on the right front as follows: Bind off the 3rd and 4th sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row. BODY If buttons are desired instead of a zipper, see instructions above. Cast on 152 (160-168) sts on smaller circular needles with brown and knit 4 rows garter st. Change to circular needles 5 mm (US 8)and place markers as follows: 34 (36-38) sts for the front, place marker, 84 (88-92) sts for the back, place marker, 34 (36-38) sts for the front. Work in stocking st with 2 edge st in garter st on each side. Inc each side at the center front inside the 2 edge sts which are knit in garter st throughout and at the same time, dec each side of the markers. Inc 1 st inside the 2 edge sts every other row 8 times, and dec 1 st each side of the markers every 4th row 1 time, then every 3rd row 6 times, then every 4th row 1 time = 136 (144-152) sts. To dec before the markers: slip 1, K 1, psso. To dec after the markers, K 2 tog. At the same time, when the work measures approx. 4.5 cm [1.75"], begin Pattern. Begin the Pattern on the right front so that when the increases at the center front are finished there are 4 sts between the pattern and the center front edge. On the left front place the pattern as on the right front, but reversed (mirror image). When the increases at the center front are finished, continue to knit the 2 edge sts in garter st. When the work measures 17 cm [6.75"] inc 1 st each side of the markers every 3rd row 9 (10-10) times = 172 (184 192) sts. When the work measures 34 (34-35) cm [13-3/8" (13-3/8" - 13.75")], knit the next row as follows: 41 (44-46) sts for the front, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 82 (88-92) sts for the back, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 41 (44-46) sts for the front. Knit the rest of each part separately. FRONT 41 (44-46) sts. Bind off for armhole every other row: 3 sts 1 (2-2) times, 2 sts 2 times, 1 st 3 (2-2) times. 31 (32-34) sts. Make decs as follows: After the 2 center front edge sts: Dec 2 sts: K 3 tog; Dec 1 st: K 2 tog Before the 2 center sts: Dec 2 sts: slip 1, K 2 tog, psso; Dec 1 st: slip 1, K 1, psso. 20 (20-22) sts remain on the shoulder. When the Pattern is finished, knit stockinette st with brown to finished dimensions. Bind off when the work measures 57 (58-59) cm [22.5" (22-7/8" - 23.25")]. BACK 82 (88-92) sts. Bind off for armholes as on the front. 62 (64-68) sts. When the work measures 55 (56-57) cm [21-5/8" (22" - 22.5")] bind off the center 22 (24-24) sts for the neck. Bind off for sleeve caps each side every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 8 (9-9) times, 3 sts 2 times. Bind off. The work measures approx. 56 (57-57) cm [22" (22.5" - 22.5")]. ASSEMBLY Pick up approx. 25 sts along the back neck on smaller double pointed needles with brown and knit 4 rows garter st back and forth on needle. Bind off. Sew shoulder seams. To form the zipper pockets, pick up approx. 55-60 sts from the wrong side on the inside of the 2 edge sts along the left front from the end of the increasing to the beginning of the neck shaping on smaller needles with brown and knit 2 rows in stockinette st. Bind off. Repeat along the right front. Insert the zipper in the zipper pockets and sew into place. Sew in the sleeves. |
