NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inches - click here. Knitting gauge: 17 stitches x 22 rows on needle size 5 mm / US 8 in stockinette sts = 10 x 10 cm / 4'' x 4''

Double seed sts:
1st row: K1, P1.
2nd row: K over K, P over P.
3rd row P over K, K over P,
th row: K over K, P over P.
Repeat row 1-4.

Back and front piece:
Worked back and forth on circular needle from mid front.
Cast on 176-192-203 sts on circular needle size 4.5 mm / US 7 and work 2 cm / 3/4'' double seed sts. Insert a marker each side = 44-48-51 sts front piece, 88-96-102 sts back piece, 44-48-51 sts front piece.
Change to needle size 5 mm / US 8 and continue in stockinette sts. After 7-5-5 rows dec 1 st on both sides of each marker and repeat the dec another 4-6-6 times on every 7-5-5 rows = 156-164-176 sts. At the same time when piece measures 15-15-16 cm knit next row as follows: 8-8-8 sts, first work then slip the next 28 sts on a holder (pocket), knit until 36-36-36 sts left on row, first work then slip the next 28 sts on a holder (pocket), 8-8-8 sts. On the return row cast on 28 sts over bound off sts.
When piece measures 18-18-19 cm inc 1 st on both sides of each marker a total of 3-4-4 times on every 11-9-9 row = 168-180-192 sts.
When piece measures 38-40-41 cm knit next row as follows: 40-43-46 sts = front piece, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 80-86-92 sts = back piece, bind off 4 sts for armhole, 40-43-46 sts = front piece.
Now complete each piece separately.

Right front piece: = 40-43-46 sts. Bind off to shape the armhole on every other row: 2 sts 1-2-3 times and 1 st 2-2-2 times = 36-37-38 sts. When piece measures 40-42-44 cm cast on 5 sts towards mid front for lapel and continue as follows - read all of the following section before knitting it!
Lapel and collar: Knit lapel sts in double seed sts and inc 1 st inside edge st (= first of inc sts) 5 times on every 1 cm / 3/8'' (knit remaining sts in stockinette sts). When lapel measures 16 cm bind off 11 sts towards mid front and cast on 11 new sts on return row (= collar)
Neckline: At the same time as inc for lapel dec to shape the neckline: dec inside 5 lapel sts on every other row: 3-4-4 sts 1 time, 1 st 5 times; on every 4th row: 1 st 2 times and then on every 6th row: 1 st 2 times = 39-39-40 sts.
When piece measures 63-65-67 cm bind off 24-24-25 sts on shoulder and continue in double seed sts over the remaining 15-15-15 collar sts. Put sts on a thread on every other row as follows: 2 sts 7 times and 1 st 1 times.
Now put all sts back on needle and work 7-7.5-7.5 cm seed sts.
Bind off from outer shoulder on every other row: 2 sts 5 times and 5 sts 1 time.

Left front piece: Like right front piece, but mirrored.

Back piece: = 80-86-92 sts. Dec to shape the armhole as described for front piece = 72-74-76 sts.
When piece measures 61-63-65 cm bind off the middle 20-22-22 sts for neck and dec 2 sts on neckline on next row.
Bind off remaining sts when piece measures 63-65-67 cm – adjust to front piece.

Sleeves: Cast on 38-38-38 sts on double pointed needles size 4.5 mm / US 7 and work 8 cm / 3 1/8'' double seed sts.
Change to needle size 5 mm / US 8 and continue in stockinette sts.
At the same time, inc 2 sts mid under arm 24-24-25 times on every 3rd round = 86-86-88 sts.
When piece measures 47-47-47 cm bind off 4 sts mid under arm and finish sleeve back and forth on needle.
Dec for sleeve cap on every other row: 4-4-3 sts 7-7-8 times and bind off remaining sts. Sleeve measures approx 45-55-56 cm.

Assembly: Join shoulders.
Pick up approx 76 to 84 sts along left front edge up to the lapel on needle size 4.5 mm / US 7 and work 3 cm / 1 1/8'' double seed sts back and forth. Repeat along right front edge, but after 1 cm / 3/8'' make 5 buttonholes evenly distributed on row. 1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts on return row.
Sew collar to front and back neckline and sew tog collar mid back.

“Fake” pockets: Put sts from holder back on needle size 4.5 mm / US 7 and work 3 cm / 1 1/8'' double seed sts, bind off and attach to sides with mattress sts on WS.
Repeat on the other pocket.
Set in sleeves and sew on buttons.
