NOTE: This pattern is written in American English. All measurements in charts are in cm. For conversion from cm to inch - click here.
There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English. If this pattern includes crochet, click for "crochet terms" here.
Gauge: 9 sts x 11 rows with 1 strand each Alaska and Vienna in stockinette st = 10 x 10 cm [4" x 4"]
Pattern: See charts. The pattern is seen from the right side. Arrows indicate the starting points for different sizes on the charts for Patterns 1, 2, 3 and 4. All sizes begin the same for Patterns 5 and 6.
Note: Size Small is approx. 12 cm [4.75"] shorter than the other sizes, in order to have a complete pattern at center front. If you wish to make size Small as long as the other sizes, do not bind off for the armholes until the piece measures approx. 50 cm [19.75"] (as for size M/L).
Knitting tip: When instructions refer to «left side» or «right side» edge, it means the left or right side as the garment is worn.
Front: Cast on 62-68-74 sts with 1 strand Alaska and 1 strand Vienna. Knit Pattern 1- start at appropriate arrow on the chart for your size - but keep 1 st at each edge in garter st throughout. After Pattern 1 inc 1 st = 63-69-75 sts on needles and knit Pattern 2 one time, then repeat Pattern 3. When the piece measures approx. 38-50-49 cm [14 7/8" - 19.75" - 19.25"] (adjust so you end after a complete repeat of Pattern 3), knit Pattern 4 and bind off 4-4-4 sts at the left side and 3-3-3 sts at the right side (see knitting tip) = 56-62-68 sts. Bind off for armhole at each side every other row: 2 sts 0-2-3 times, 1 st 4-3-4 times = 48-48-48 sts. Continue in Pattern 4.
When armhole measures approx. 16-16-17 cm [6.25" - 6.25" - 6.75"]) bind off 8-8-8 sts at center front for neck. Bind off at each neck edge every other row: 2 sts 1-1-1 time, 1 st 3-3-3 times = 15-15-15 sts remain on each shoulder.
When armhole measures 22-22-23 cm [8 5/8" - 8 5/8" - 9"] dec 3 sts by K 2 tog across the 6 sts of the cable on shoulders = 12-12-12 sts remain on each shoulder. On the next row bind off all sts. The piece measures approx. 60-72-72 cm [23 5/8" - 28.25" - 28.25"].
Back: Cast on and knit the same as the front. Bind off for armhole as on front and knit until the piece measures approx. 57-69-69 cm [22.5" - 27 1/8" - 27 1/8"]. Dec 4 sts over the center 18 sts. On the next row bind off the center 14 sts for the neck = 15-15-15 sts remain on each shoulder. On the next row dec 3 sts by K 2 tog across the 6 sts of the cable on shoulders = 12-12-12 sts remain on each shoulder. On the next row bind off all sts. The piece measures approx. 60-72-72 cm [23 5/8" - 28.25" - 28.25"].
Sleeve: Cast on 31-31-31 sts with 1 strand Alaska and 1 strand Vienna. Establish pattern as follows: 1 edge st in stockinette st, K 1, P 3, 24 sts in Pattern 6, K 1, 1 edge st in stockinette st. After 7 rows inc 4 sts over the center 9 sts (35-35-35 sts) and knit Pattern 5 over the center 25 sts with P 3 and K 2 at each side. When the piece measures 10 cm [4"] inc 1 st at each side (inside edge sts): 5 times every 8-8-7 cm [3 1/8" - 3 1/8" - 2.75"] = 45-45-45 sts - the increased sts are knit in Pattern 6 as you go along. When the piece measures 48-46-44 cm [18 7/8" - 18 1/8" - 17.25"] bind off for armhole at each side: 3 sts 1-1-1 time, 2 sts 3-1-1 times, 1 st 0-3-4 times, 2 sts 0-1-1 time, 3 sts 1-1-1 time = 21-19-17 sts remain on needles. Dec 4 sts evenly distributed on the next row = 17-15-13 sts. Bind off, the piece measures approx. 57-58-59 cm [22.5" - 22 7/8" - 23.25"]
Assembly: Sew shoulder seams.
Neck: Pick up sts around the neck so that there will be 4 sts overlapping at center front. Pick up with 1 strand Vienna and 1 strand Alaska. Start pick up 2 sts to the right of center front, pick up sts around the neck and end 2 sts to the left of center front, so that the 4 center front sts have been picked up twice. A total of 41 - 47 sts (divisible by 6 + 11 sts) should be picked up. Knit back and forth on needles from as follows (seen from the right side: 4 sts garter st, P 3, 30 - 36 sts of Pattern 6, 4 sts garter st. Continue in pattern as established until collar measures approx. 12 cm [4.75"], bind off in pattern. Sew in sleeves using edge st on Body as a seam allowance. Sew sleeve and side seams using edge sts as a seam allowance.
