* K 3, P 2 *, repeat from *-* the entire round. Pattern is over 5 sts and no of sts are divisible by 5 minus 1. When working in the round, the pattern will displace 1 st towards the left on every round and forms a spiral pattern.

Dec 1 st before every marker. Work until 2 sts remain before marker, slip 1 st as if to K, K 1, psso.

GARTER ST (in the round on circular needle):
* K 1 round and P 1 round *, repeat from *-*. 1 ridge = 2 rounds.

Worked in the round on circular needle from bottom up. Cast on 74-79-84 sts on circular needle size 5.5 mm / US 9 with 2 strands Baby Alpaca Silk. Join and work SPIRAL PATTERN - see explanation above!
Continue working spiral pattern this way until piece measures approx. 14-15-16 cm / 5½"-6"-6 1/4". NOTE! Make sure not to stretch piece when measuring, the hat will contract vertically and in width because of pattern.
On next round work pattern as before but dec in every other K section by K 2 tog (K the first 2 tog).
Work next round with spiral pattern as before but there are now alternately 2 and 3 K sts between every P section in every repetition.
On next round K 2 tog in all sections with 3 K sts = 59-63-67 sts.
Work 1 round spiral pattern as before but now with K 2 and P 2.
K 1 round, P 1 round and then insert 6 markers in piece as follows:
3/5 years: 10-10-10-10-10-9 sts between every marker.
6/9 years: 11, 10, 11, 10, 11, 10 sts between every marker.
10/12 years: 12, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11 sts between every marker.
Continue in garter st - see above, until finished – AT THE SAME TIME DEC – READ DECREASE TIP at every marker on every K round a total of 8-9-10 times.
After all dec there are 11-9-7 sts on needle.
Cut the yarn, use a needle and baste the yarn through the last sts a couple of times before tightening and then fastening.
Piece measures approx. 20-21-22 cm / 8"-8 1/4"-8 3/4".
