Knitting gauge: 11 sts x 15 rows stocking sts = 10 x 10 cm [4’’ x 4’’]

Moss stitch: 1st row: * K1, P1 *, repeat from *-*. 2nd row: K over P and P over K. Repeat 2nd row.

Increasing tips: Inc by YO1 sts. On next row knit into back of YO sts (i.e. knit into back part of sts, not knit into front of yo sts) to avoid a hole.

Rib: * K1, P2 *, repeat from *-*.

Garter st: Knit all rows back and forth on needle

Mittens: Knit piece back and forth on needle. Cast on 24-27 sts needle size 8 mm [US 11] with Eskimo.
Knit 2 rows garter sts. Continue in Rib - see explanation above – until piece measures 6 cm [2,3’’]. Then knit 2 cm [0,75’’] stockinette sts, 4 rows garter sts - see explanation above – and 2 cm [0,75’’] stockinette sts.
At the same time on last row stockinette sts dec 4-5 sts evenly = 20-22 sts.
Continue in moss sts – see explanation above.
When piece measures 15-17 cm [6-6,75’’] insert 1 marking thread or stitch marker in 9th -10th sts on row (= marker for thumb). Continuing inc 1 sts on each side of sts with marking thread or stitch marker on every other row 2 times in total = 24-26 sts.
After last inc slip new sts (incl sts with marking thread or stitch marker) + 1 sts on each side of these sts onto thread or stitch holder for thumb = 7 thumb sts. Cast on 1 sts behind thumb sts and knit miss sts back and forth over 18-20 sts until piece measures approx 23-26 cm [9-10’’]. Continue in stocking sts. When piece measures 27-30 cm [10½-11,75’’] knit all sts tog 2 by 2 = 9-10 sts left on row.
Pull double thread through remaining sts, pull tog and sew away.

Thumb: Slip 7 sts from thread or stitch holder back onto needle. Cast on new sts on side and knit moss sts. When thumb measures approx 2.5-3.5 cm [1-1,25’’] from where sts were slipped back onto needle knit 2 first and 2 last sts on row tog = 6 sts. Repeat dec on next row = 4 sts. Pull one double thread through remaining sts, pull tog and sew on well.

Assembly: Sew side seams on mitten and thumb in outermost part of outermost sts to avoid thick seam.
Knit 1 more mitten, but move marking thread or stitch marker to 11th -12th sts, to place thumb correctly.
